Random Happenings #1
Things that occured in Mytilene over the week or two between Field Trip #1 and Field Trip #2.
Although we were in the midst of a very demanding schedule of classes and homework, we still managed to find time to visit the beach daily. That's Jenn, a boat, and Turkey. Hoorah!
While in the computer lab (for homework, not chatting on AIM or writing emails.... no wait) we found some baby kittens out in the alley. So we brought them in to play with. Not only were we allowed to have kittens in the computer lab, we could also eat and drink. Europe is sweet. People took their dogs into McDonalds in France... but that's a whole nother story.
One of the most random happenings in all of our trip is depicted above. We went into town for class and dinner one night. Afterwords, we saw a band playing in Sappho Square (the statue is Sappho). We think "ooh, sweet. a concert! lets stay and watch for a bit" and there are some Greeks dancing and stuff. One was a girl we met at a bar one night. So we're thinking "this is cool." Then some dude comes over to us, and starts chatting. I ignored him for a while, but finally asked Dana what he was saying. Apparently this was a peace rally, protesting the Greek government for letting the Americans use Greece as a base for planes in our anti-Iraq war. This dude went on a massive tirade about how our president was not legally elected and its great that we're supporting peace and whatever else. Um, excuse me dude, we just wanted to hear the music. Shut your pie hole and let us enjoy the concert! Then he got up and made a speech about peace and welcomed the American students who are with them, pointing at us. Hmm. Oh well. It was a nice concert. But he creeped us out.
We were taking classes at the University of the Aegean, although our professors are affiliated with MSU. This man is the founder of the University, which currently is located on five islands in the Aegean Sea. He gave us a lecture on how he founded the school, and afterwords we enjoyed a wonderful dinner.
YUM! I love Greek food.
The woman in the center of the picture with the white shirt is Iro, our translator/general helper. She rocked.
