Days

Steps for PBL

Preparation:

Day 1 & 2 (Block)

Days 1,2 & 3 (Regular Class Periods)

  • Introduction to PBL style of learning
  • Read Scenario for PBL 1
  • Students Complete Facts and Questions Sheets
  • Students work in groups and brainstorm facts and questions
  • Students research the timeline and aerial map.
  • Students build a topographic landscape using the topographic mapping activity using an algebraic calculation to determine the amount of clay to use at each elevation.
  • Students go to google earth and put in the address of the pollution and zoom into the area to determine what businesses surround the area
  1. Print out PBL 1
  2. Print out Part Cards on Card Stock and Laminate
  3. Print Facts and Questions Sheets
  4. Print PBL Group Cards on Card Stock and Laminate
  5. Copy one brainstorming rules sheet onto stock paper and laminate.
  6. Have two sheets of Poster Paper for each PBL group
  7. Folders for each PBL team or lab group
  8. Print Timeline, Aerial Map and Topographic Map or provide internet access for each PBL group.
  9. Print topographic landscape activity and reading topographic map directions for each student.
  10. Download Google Earth on computer so students can zoom into area of pollution using this program.

Day 3 (Block)

Days 4,5 & 6 (Regular Class Periods)

or Field Trip to Creek site

  • Students read PBL 2
  • Students continue collecting facts and questions on sheets sheets
  • Students work in groups and brainstorm facts and questions
  • Students complete a lab or field study of the creek (field study-full day)
  • If working in the lab students rotate through three stations in groups A, B and C (limnology, stream table, water and soil testing)
  1. Copy PBL 2 Scenario for each student.
  2. Print Lab Sheets for each activity.
  3. Order Pondwater Test kit from Wards if you are not using Palms/Probeware
  4. Create kits in plastic boxes which contain:
  • microscope slides
  • microscope
  • hand held gps unit
  • palm and probes (if used) or pondwater testing tabs and baggies
  • soil collector
  • water and soil samples and pictures from three locations at the creek site

Day 4 (Block)

Days 7 & 8 (Regular Class Periods)

or Field Trip to Site of Pollution with Health Department Representative and to Public Library

  • Students Read PBL 3
  • Students continue collecting facts and questions on sheets sheets
  • Students work in groups and brainstorm facts and questions
  • Students are in three different groups A, B and C
  • Students in groups A, B and C are assigned different categories to research for the presentation based on questions asked throughout the PBL
  • Students choose pictures from their plastic folders
  • Students type information gathered from research into a template which will be posted on their presentation board.
  • Students create a presentation on a three tiered presentation board according to directions
  1. Copy PBL 3 Scenario for each student.
  2. Copy presentation directions for each student
  3. Place pictures of the creek site and different research articles into each of the folders, A, B and C
  4. Purchase three tiered poster presentation board for each group or class
  5. If taking a field trip, make arrangements with the health department and local library

Day 5 (Block)

Day 9 & 10 (Regular Classes)

Finish Poster Board and present to group of teachers, students and parents that would represent the community board, local politicians and health professionals Reserve an area big enough to host a community meeting and provide food and drink, if possible, for guests and students
