The Day After Tomorrow (2004)

Directed by: Roland Emmerich
Written by: story by Roland Emmerich, screenplay by Roland Emmerich & Jeffrey Nachmanoff
Starring: Dennis Quaid, Jake Gyllenhaal, Emmy Rossum, Dash Mihok, Jay O. Sanders, Ian Holm, Sela Ward
Review: The awe-inspiring and terrifying images of tornadoes ripping through Los Angeles, a giant tidal wave engulfing New York City and super-freezes plummeting Earth into an ice age make this film visually spectacular. The scenes of New York flooded, frozen and covered with snow are haunting and breathtaking. These aspects more than make up for some dodgy dialogue, which is basically the only problem with this disaster flick, if you like the genre. It also has some political irony thrown in here and there and some dire warnings on the effects of global warming even if the science is veering more towards science-fiction.

Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (2004)

Directed by: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Written by: Rawson Marshall Thurber
Starring: Vince Vaughn, Ben Stiller, Christine Taylor, Rip Torn
Review: This is unashamedly low-brow comedy, and because it doesn't try to be anything more, it is quite funny. There are plenty of laughs, albeit at quite crude and politically incorrect jokes. Ben Stiller's character equally cracked me up and disgusted me. Worth it for a laugh.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)

Directed by: Michel Gondry
Written by: story by Charlie Kaufman & Michel Gondry & Pierre Bismuth, screenplay by Charlie Kaufman
Starring: Jim Carrey, Kate Winslet, Kirsten Dunst, Elijah Wood, Tom Wilkinson, Mark Ruffalo
Review: Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) is just your average guy, but his girlfriend Clementine (Kate Winslet) is a little more on the wacky side. One day Joel visits her at work where she appears to have no idea who he is. Joel is, unsurprisingly, confused and angry, only to later find that she has undergone a procedure to have all memories of him wiped from her brain. Joel then decides to do the same, but as the procedure is happening, he realises he doesnt want to lose his memories of Clementine and tries to hold on to them.
Weird, wacky, visually amazing (achieved with limited special effects) lots of strange things happen but what I picked up on most was the very genuine and heartfelt love story at the centre of the movie. There was something very real about itI really recommend this film both for its inventive and quirky script, amazing visuals and beautiful, yet far from clichd, love story.

The Forgotten (2004)

Directed by: Joseph Ruben
Written by: Gerald Di Pego
Starring: Julianne Moore, Dominic West, Gary Sinise, Anthony Edwards, Alfre Woodard
Review: The Forgotten stars Julianne Moore as a grieving mother, dealing with the loss of her son who was killed in plane crash a year ago. Suddenly evidence that she ever had a son starts to disappear, and her life begins to fall apart all around her. People tell her that she never had a son, and that it is just a massive hallucination, but she will not be convinced. Then she finds Ash who, like her, used to have a daughter, but all evidence of her has disappeared. Together they are on the run from mysterious suits who want to arrest them for no reason, and no one will believe them.
This film has several genuine jump-out-of-your-seat moments (one of which is ruined by the fact its in the trailer) and these, combined with the moody cinematography and Julianne Moores excellent acting, serve to elevate this film above the mediocre. However, this isnt a straight thriller, there are sci-fi aspects used to explain some of the happenings, which may not sit well with some audiences. However, The Forgotten is still a tight and chilling thriller, with a great concept that is slightly diminished by unrealistic explanations.

Fun with Dick and Jane (2005)

Directed by:Dean Parisot
Written by: Judd Apatow, Nicholas Stoller, Peter Tolan
Starring: Jim Carrey, Ta Leoni
Review: Fun with Dick and Jane is a remake of a 1977 film of the same title, which starred George Segal and Jane Fonda.
In this modern update, the movie takes a few swipes at the world of big corporations and their catastrophic collapses. Dick (Jim Carrey) works at Globodyne, which, when it crashes, leaves all the employees with nothing, except for its CEO who takes off with millions. Dick and his wife Jane (Tea Leoni) must resort to robbery to maintain their affluent lifestyle.
Suitable amounts of hilarity ensue and various corporate jokes are bandied around but its not enough to bring it above the average. The end of the movie, in fact the last line, is a good one, but only if you get it which some may not, especially in a few years time.
