Lost in Translation (2003)

Directed by: Sofia Coppola
Written by: Sofia Coppola
Starring: Bill Murray, Scarlett Johannsen
Review: A beautifully filmed movie accompanied by an evocative, thoughtful musical score. This is a slow film that at times takes on a dreamy pace, creating moods. The conversations enabled me personally to relate to the characters and in a sense, the writer, as Sofia Coppola mirrors some of her own life in the script. This is a small film about humans on a human scale, a refreshing change from the epics also released at the time (which I loved too, but still, its nice to have something different nonetheless). The film enhances this sense of the smallness of humans because the main characters (Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson) seem so lost in a foreign place, unable to connect to their surroundings, but eventually making a human connection to one another.
