DVD and Video
Still Crazy, starring Bill Nighy and Billy Connolly. This movie was hillarious even though it was a bit sad at times. It's about your average aging rock band trying to make a comeback while dealing with their differences and difficulties with each other. Bill Nighy is the ultimate old man rock star and he is one funny guy. If you like The Commitments you'd probably like this. It's a bit more toned down version. This is one I'm looking forward to buying along with the soundtrack.
Equilibrium, starring Christian Bale, Sean Bean and Taye Diggs. To prevent war and crime these guys have removed all emotion by having their citizens inject themselves with Prozium daily. However, when one stops taking it and starts feeling, problems occur. There's a bit of the Matrix like action in this but I like it much better than the Matrix, it's more my style. It's an awesome combination of gunfire, bringing down the machine and really cool dudes.
All the Queens Men, starring Eddie Izzard and Matt LeBlanc. This takes place during WW2; a group of soldiers has to sneak into a factory in Germany and steal a decoder machine but to do so they must dress as women (enter Eddie) because there wasn't any men working in the factories at the time. Matt LeBlanc is decent and makes an interesting looking woman but Eddie and the rest of the cast is really hillarious.
The Machinist, starring a terrible looking Christian Bale. (Never thought I'd say that.) Christian lost 63 pounds to play this part and it serves its purpose, he does not look well. It's what they call a "psychological thriller". If you liked the movie Identity you'll probably like this one. It has the suspense down and even though it's painful to look at Christian (saying it hurts I swear) it's a good thrill.
American Psycho, as payment to your senses (as far as Christian is concerned) watch this one. It lives up to the word "Psycho" in every possible way and there's no other way to describe it. If you want to see something extremely twisted, but very entertaining if you are of the twisted persuasion, see this movie. And though he may be covered in blood, a normal sized Christian Bale is quite naked on several occassions which would make anything worth watching. Willem Dafoe also has a small part, but he remains fully clothed.
The Office, UK version, Season 1&2. (We'll be watching the Christmas Special as soon as possible.) If you don't get subtle humor or British humor or subtle, British humor do NOT watch this because you may very well hate it. However, if you like that stuff you must watch this as soon as you can get your hands on it. I will personally tell you to save some time and just order it off Amazon.com. It is probably the funniest thing I have ever watched in my life. I actually felt sick from laughing so much. At times it's like watching a train speeding towards a brick wall; you're praying for it to stop but you can't get enough! If anyone gets it let me know what you thought!
Saw, surprisingly bad acting by Cary Elwes is the salt on the wound that is Saw. More twisted but slightly similar to the movie The Game, which is an excellent movie but not the case here. It's worth seeing if you're in the mood for something creepy and non-fulfilling. Otherwise just skip it.
House of The Flying Daggers, makes the subtitles worth it. The movie isn't in the words anyway, it's completely visual. It has Matrix-like abandonment of natural laws in a very pretty way. A love story also makes its way in and is the perfect way to tie everything togeter. Really great to look at and keeps you on your toes.
Shaun of the Dead, it's a British zombie movie which doesn't really sound that cool but it's hillarious!
Quills, starring Geoffrey Rush, Michael Caine, Kate Winslett and Joaquin Phoenix. It's about the Marquis de Sade, and it's slightly twisted. There's not a less than perfect performance anywhere and it's quite funny in places.
The Englishman (Who Went up a Hill and Came Down a Mountain), starring Hugh Grant. It's Hugh, he's charming. He informs a small town that their prize "mountain" is in fact a hill but they intend to change that and it's amusing in the process. This is just a cute Saturday afternoon movie.

In Theatres (That's where I saw them at least.)
Derailed, starring Clive Owen and Jennifer Aniston. This is Jen's new "dark" role. The acting is fine in general but please don't waste your time going to see this movie. The villain is pretty cool, but aside from that and about 15 minutes or so of the movie, it's complete crap. Pity, they gave it a good try. (Rappers should not be allowed in movies.)
Jarhead, starring Jake Gyllenhall, Peter Sarsgaard and Jamie Foxx. I really enjoyed this movie and it is extremely well done. It was much funnier than I thought it was going to be, but it's not a "funny" movie. Every scene does it's job and hardly a single word is wasted; the actors are superb. Not that I know from my personal experience, but I think it is a really accurate showing of the war and the people and the Marines in general. There are several scenes that alone are amazing at showing exactly what they need to show, and two specific lines that I really liked, but if you want to know you'll have to ask. (Ok, 3 actually, but one is just funny.) Some of the scenery in this film looks like something out of a scifi movie, but I believe it's pretty accurate. The music is awesome. I will watch this one again for sure.
Flight Plan, starring Jodie Foster, Peter Sarsgaard and Sean Bean. This was really close to being a good movie. It's not bad, it's just- eh. Jodie is very good, Peter is cool and Sean is wearing a pilot uniform, need I say more about him? The problem was too many plot lines... The just overflowed. It was fun if you like trying to figure out what exactly is going on and the plot twists and all that. There is abundant cheesy-ness, I have no idea what they were thinking. They need to re-cut and take out some of the crap, then it would be much better.
The Brothers Grimm, starring Matt Damon, Heath Ledger and Jonathan Pryce. This movie was directed by Terry Gilliam and that is obvious from the first second if you know about him at all. That fact alone adds the element of the absurd to the movie. But, I like absurd and I really liked the movie. I saw it twice actually. Matt Damon does a wonderful English accent, I was quite impressed. Ledger was very funny, but a lot of his humor (as well as the rest of the humor in the movie) was lost on the Kansans. You'll just have to go see for yourself, I can only gague one state at a time. I thought it was fabulous visually and the story was a good time. Fairy tales are twisted, and Terry is good at twisted.
Red Eye, starring Cillian Murphy, Rachel McAdams. Directed by Wes Craven. This is another one of those movies that I quite enjoyed but people seem to be pretty split on it. Cillian (Batman) is a relative newcomer to mainstream films, but he's very good. He's very good at being bad actually. (He's also extremely pretty.) Rachel McAdams was surprising because I did not dislike her. I usually hate the female characters because they are so very useless, but she was a kick-ass woman. Red Eye isn't going to be up for an Oscar but it's a fun thriller; I would see it again. If nothing else, only for Cillian...and a couple certain scenes...ahhh.
March of the Penguins, starring a lot of penguins and the voice of Morgan Freeman. If you like penguins you should certainly see this. It is a very good educational film that isn't boring, that's a new idea these days. If you ever thought your life was hard you better be thrilled you're not a penguin. It's a good film for anyone to see; the kids would really like it if they like animals. Though some parts might be a bit distressing if they are old enough to get the whole picture.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, starring Johnny Depp and Freddie Highmore. This is similar story-wise to the old movie (with a few extra bits) but still quite different. It's been a long time since I read it, but it is supposed to be more like the book this time. As usual Johnny is fabulous beyond all reason. The Oompa Loompas new songs are shockingly cool, the children are even more dispicable than in the original so it's even more fun when they disappear, and the visual experience is superb. The whole thing is really hillarious, thanks to another perfect performance by Johnny. If I was feeling saucy I'd say I like it better than the old one.
Batman Begins, starring Christian Bale, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman, Cillian Murphy, Liam Neeson and Gary Oldman. This is barely comparable to the old Batman movies, so don't do it. The scenery shot in Iceland is the most amazing looking stuff ever. Christian Bale is the most graceful fighter I have ever seen and by far the best Batman that there will ever be. There are certain scenes alone in this movie that I would pay double just to see again. This was the coolest (non-Harry Potter) movie I have seen since Pirates of the Caribbean and Lord of the Rings. By the way, the Batmobile is AWESOME! Oh yeah, and Katie Holmes is in it as well. She could have been left out, but she filled some space in the story I guess.
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, this is an excellent chick movie but if a guy were to be forced to it he might enjoy it even though boys just don't get a lot of things. Great movie and some sweet scenery! Also the beginning for a new child star I believe. (I hear from my own sisterhood that the book is very good as well.)
The Interpreter, starring Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn. It's an interesting movie that has something new in it and some good points made. Nicole and Sean's characters are both very good.
Madagascar, it's no Nemo but it's worth seeing for sure. It's pretty hillarious. All Hail the New York Giants!
Star Wars, Episode III. It's Star Wars, just go see it, don't argue.
Kingdom of Heaven, starring Orlando Bloom and Liam Neeson. If you like these kinds of movies to begin with then that helps. I think it's worth seeing, but it's too long and disconnected. We see it no matter what because Orlando is in it and we love him. There's a few, right from Lord of the Rings scenes, but it could have been a lot better. It's a good subject so maybe someone else will make a better one. |
