the theatre. When she was in high school, she was an active member in the drama club and always was auditioning for a role. At the age of 17, she left Iowa and went to New York. She enrolled at New York University to study philosophy, but never attended a class. Instead, she entered into the Stella Addler Acadamy of Acting. She made her first appearances on stage before she moved to television to star in the 1975 ABC soap, Ryan's Hope. From then on she also did TV series and movies, such as Heartbeat, (TV series) and A Stranger Is Watching (movie). In 1983, she gave birth to her first son, Ian Thomas. And in 1984, her second son was born, Alexander James. Their father is Kate's first husband, Robert Egan. In 1991, Kate won the Tracy Humanitarian Award for her portrayal of an alcoholic anchorwoman when she guest-starred on the episode On The Rocks of the sitcom Murphy Brown. In 1998, she won the Saturn Award and the Golden Satellite Award for her portrayal of Captain Kathryn Janeway in Star Trek: Voyager. On April 19, 1999, Kate married politician Timothy F. Hagan, who ran for governor of Ohio in the last election. They were featured in the February 2001 issue of Cleveland Magazine.
