Kate Center Stage-Tea At Five
Tea At Five is a theatrical production about screen legend, Katherine Hepburn. The play is divided into two acts. In act one, we see a 31 year old Hepburn at her family Fenwick cottage in Old Saybrook Connecticut in September, 1938. She is going through a difficult time in her career. Even though she has made various Broadway appearances and had won her first Oscar, she was labeled "box office poison" by those whom her career depended upon the most.
Hollywood was a no less than challenging place for females in the 1930's and 1940's. In the 1920's, women were the main power behind the (then small) movie industry. Many women wrote, directed, produced and even acted in their own films. However, as the world of moving pictures began to captivate the attention of more and more people all over the world, men quickly rose to the head of the rapidly growing empire. Many of the women behind the camera were being forced from their possessions, but the women in front of the camera, just seemed to be gaining constant momentum and popularity with the public. So many women entered into Hollywood proclaiming that they were going to be a star! That dream came true for so few of them. However, some never gave up. Despite constant rejection, failure and criticism some kept going. That takes a special kind of character. One that is apparent in Katherine Hepburn.
