Photos of village life from our trip up country |
Here's what most of the villages look like. Nearly all have thatched roofs, some are made of mud bricks, others, like these, are also walled with thatch. Note the donkey under the shade. The green flag shows this village supports the APRC, the President's political party |
Here a small boy sees his first Tuubaab (Kate), and is not amused! His brothers think this is most amusing, but we found it a bit traumatic. The only remedy seems to be the removal of the baby! Perhaps their mothers tell them to behave or the white bogey men will come to carry them off? |
These boys are hiding their faces under sacks to learn humility. They've recently been circumsized, and are learning how to take their place as men, leaving the world of boys behind. This initiation ritual is not so different to those in use here hundreds of years ago! (Remember the beginning of Roots?) |

Ben gets thanked the Fulla way! The village women all have their own songs and dances, and as honored guests we got treated. Since I was just along to observe, their gratitude was perhaps a bit misplaced, but we were thrilled to see this glimpse of village ceremonial life |
Most of the local women have 1 outfit for special occasions. These village women have come into Basse to receive a milling machine. We hardly recognized them from our visits the day before so fancy were their clothes! |
