Nobody thinks I should dress up as a hula girl, said Liz to her friend, Early. Everyones so adamant against it. I dont understand why.
Liz sat with Early at an outdoor caf on the day before Halloween discussing costumesor rather, Liz was discussing costumes. Early just listened to her blather on, as Liz was a bit of a motormouth. Liz wore a knee-length denim skirt and a black DKNY tee shirt. Her bare feet were crossed at the ankles under her chair, resting on top of her exercise sandals as she sipped on her cappuccino. Lizs feet being out of her shoes was no happenstance. Somewhat of an exhibitionist, Liz loved to expose her bare feet. She thought they were just the cutest, and wanted everyone to look at them and notice just how cute her feet were.
. Whenever she got the opportunity she would slide her feet out of her sandals, shoeplaying like a little girl, with feet waving around, toes wiggling and shoes sliding about on the floor, often losing contact with themall in the hopes of drawing attention to herself. At the moment, however, Lizs feet were unusually tame.
Early was a competent shoeplayer in her own right, her toes pressing into the backs of her pink flip-flops. Early was completely oblivious to her own shoeplay, nevertheless. Her feet seemed to act on their own accord.
You know why everyones adamant against it, said Early.
     Why?
I know your interpretation of a hula girl. Youre gonna run around topless with just a lei covering up your tits,
     And whats wrong with that?
Early laughed. Youre gonna get arrested for indecent exposure.
     My tits aint indecent.
     Whatever. Hula girlbad idea.
Anyway. . . Liz paused to take another sip of her cappuccino and her feet once again, came to life with an explosion of rubbing and toe-wiggling. I thought of another costume.
     What is it?
Im gonna be a barefoot witch. Im gonna paint my toenails and my fingernails black, and itll be awesome.
Awesome? Early repeated, crinkling her nose. Why a barefoot witch?
Thats so original. Nobodys done that before.
But why is the witch barefoot?
Maybe shes poor. I dont know. I dont need a background profile of my costume character.
Early snickered. Okay.
So what are you gonna be?
     I have to work tomorrow.
Work? We always go trick-or-treating on Halloween.
Well this year I gotta work.
     Call off.
     Psss.
You gonna have me running around door to door by myself?
You dont have to go. Arent we a little old for this now, anyway? Im nineteen, youre twenty.
So? said Liz with a pout. Youre never too old to trick-or-treat.
     Really?
Well maybe not never. . . but Im not too old. Thats bullshit.
Theres probably gonna be some after hours Halloween parties going on that we can hit up after I get off.
Early, thats not the routine. Youre fucking up the routine.
Ay, said Early with a shrug. Shit happens.
