Despite Earlys chiding, Liz went ahead with her costume plans on Halloween. As, planned, she painted the nails on her fingers and toes black, then donned an elaborate black witches dress with matching pointy hat. She wore no extra facial make-up besides the black dot on the tip of her nose which was supposed to be a mole.
So just before the sun began to set, Liz headed out with a raggedy broom in one hand and a treat bag in the other. Liz and Early always started trick-or-treating before sunset, figuring the less time spent walking around in the dark, the better. She and Early would also door-to-door the blocks near each others houses together, but this Halloween, Liz was alone, therefore she decided to start about four blocks away and work her way back towards her house.
The first door that Liz knocked on was flung open by a girl that Liz and Early had seen around the area several times at places such as the grocery store and the mall. They didnt know her name, but called her Pocahontas, because of her long black hair that hung down to her hips.
Hola, said the girl, smiling at Liz in her witches costume.
Hola, Liz replied, smiling back. Trick-or-Treat!
Look at your little feet! squealed Pocahontas, squatting down to take a look at the toes poking out from beneath Lizs dress. Theyre so cute.
Really? said Liz, grinning. She was beaming, actually.
Yes, said Pocahontas, giving Lizs toes a few quick strokes. Liz giggled and lifted her foot from the ground, toes wiggling energetically.
Are your toes ticklish? Pocahontas asked, looking up at Liz.
     Yeah, they are.
Pocahontas stood and smoothed out her skirt. Hey, you wanna come inside for a minute?
Uh, do you have any suckers or Nowlaters? Cause those are my favorites.
     Sure. Come on in.
As soon as Liz stepped inside, she saw a huge plastic pumpkin sitting on a stool next to the door, which was filled with various types of candy.
Go ahead, said Pocahontas, seeing Liz staring at the candy. Liz rummaged around in the plastic pumpkin and picked out a few suckers.
I dont see any Nowlaters, Liz mumbled, still sifting through the collection.
I probably have some in my private stash, said Pocahontas. Sit down. Ill be right back.
     Okay.
Liz took a seat on a reclining leather chair, which was quite comfortable. As Pocahontas left the room, Liz noted that she wasnt wearing a costume. She had on a pink knee-length linen skirt, a white tank and white flip-flops. Sitting in front of Lizs chair was an ottoman. After a couple of seconds of debating whether or not she should make use of it, she took it upon herself to prop her feet atop the ottoman and started wiggling her toes. At that point, Pocahontas reentered the room. Liz gasped and set her feet back on the floor.
     Im sorry, she said.
No, go ahead, said Pocahontas. Relax. You can put you feet back up.
     You dont mind?
No. Make yourself at home. I just wanted to know if you wanted something to drink?
Something to drink? Liz repeated, returning her feet to the ottoman.
Yeah. You want milk or something?
     Milk? You got a Corona?
A Corona? said Pocahontas, chuckling. Well, we
are grown arent we? Ill see what I got. With that, Pocahontas turned and left the room again. Liz glanced around the room as she waited, toes wriggling again. Her eyes finally set on the plastic pumpkin sitting by the door. She wondered if she could sneak out a few more pieces of candy. She doubted Pocahontas would miss them, considering how full the pumpkin was. Then again, Liz would feel bad, taking advantage of Pocahontas hospitality. . .but not that bad. Liz was still wrestling with her decision when Pocahontas returned with a beer bottle in hand.
Sorry, I didnt have any Corona, said Pocahontas, handing the bottle to Liz. Is Bud okay?
