1 "During his youth, John Blinn fell in with unpopular company. As a result, he achieved an early notoriety recounted in some detail by Kenneth Scott (Counterfeiting in Colonial CT, NY, 1957). By 1710, CT and other New England colonies were increasingly troubled by altered and counterfeit copies of their Bills of Credit. The practice was widespread with many persons known to have engaged in the making and uttering of false bills....By Sept. 1720, it had been discovered that
forged CT bills had been uttered (apparently in MA) by John Blyn of Guilford, who ws calling himself, John Bishop. John Bishop, alias John Blyn, was arrested at Woodstock 2 Sept. 1720, "but in some fashion he managed to flee, and the same day a hue and cry was issued after him". Three days later Gov. Samuel Shute of MA issued a proclamation offering a reward of 10 pounds and calling for the capture of "one John Bishop of Guilford (as he calls himself) who is supposed to be the
Forger and Counterfeiter" of Bills of Credit that he had uttered." The proclamation contains the only available record of John Blinn's age in a description: "He is of the Age of about Twenty one Years, of middle Stature, having short brown
hair somewhat curled, and having on a bluye cloth coat, leather breeches and a light coloured Du Roy jacket."...Later circumstances suggest that he escaped prosecution, as did at least sixteen others, by being admitted as a witness for the
Crown. p. 324
