notes on Antoine "Antoine Fortier was born in Dieppe. His parents were Noel Fortier and Marthe Golle. In France, the name Fortier was always spelt Forestier. It was changed to Fortier after Antoine and his father arrived in the New World, around 1663. They lived in Beauport for a short while and then settled down in Ile d'Orlans. Noel was a shipbuilder who bore holes in small boats; Antoine was more interested in commercial fishing and seal hunting. He soon succeeded in owning his own boat and crew. From the archives of Notary Rageot, in 1667, we find a notarized contract between Louis Couillard, Franois James, Jacques Lozier and Antoine Fortier in which it is agreed that they will all equally share the profits from fishing and seal hunting on the Saint Lawrence river, near "L'Isle Rouge" The seals were hunted for their oil. Seal oil is clear and odorless compared to porpoise oil that has a bad odor.. In those days, seal oil sold for 50 to 55 pounds a barrel.. Ten to fifteen seals were captured in one day so, you can imagine how lucrative this business could be. Because Antoine Fortier joined one of the richest families in Nouvelle-France when he married Marie-Madeleine Cadieu in November 1677, we assume that he was quite wealthy. Those who were witnesses at his marriage were dignitaries and members of noble families. This text is translated from: Dictionnaire gnalogique Drouin. Antoine and Madeleine had 12 children, 10 sons. Eight of those sons had families thus ensuring that the name should continue. Today, the descendants are scattered throughout North America." quoted from the Fortier Family Association website (http://familles.fortier.net/) That site has much information about the family, its history, coat of arms, etc. "On 12 January 1693, Antoine Fortier, the first owner of the ship Sainte-Anne, made a business deal with the merchant Charles Macart. He would make three trips 'with the said ship' during the summer, out to Chicoutimi, to the Papinachois Indians 50 leagues below Tadoussac, who had just made a treaty with the French... '...the Sainte-Anne with a displacement of 20 to 25 tons.' A ton is equivalent to 2000 pounds. Not very large as ships go, but this ship was to be used for the transport of 'furs, merchandise and other items belonging to said company' of Tadoussac: Quite adequate for the task." from Our French Canadian Ancestors, Vol 2, by Thomas J. Laforest, p171. From the pages of the "Ancestors of Stephanie Rejean Cross": Antoine Fortier was born June 26, 1644 in St. Jacques, Dieppe, France; Died in Pentacote, Quebec, Canada. He was the son of Noel Fortier and Marie-Marthe Golle. He married Marie Cadieu/x November 21, 1677 in Beauport, Quebec, Canada. Notes for Antoine Fortier: He came from France with his father in 1665. They originally established in Beauport, but after a few years they moved across to the Island of Orleans and established themselves on the South side at a spot called L'Arb re sec. He was master of a fishing barque during this period. A deed exists between Ouis Couillard, Sieur L' Espenay, Antoine Fortier, Francois James, and Jacque Lozier where the four men agreed to equally split the profits of fish received from a fishing venture towards the Isle Rouge in the current of the St. Lawrence river. found at ancestry.com |
