The Brookings Family of Woolwich Maine
Early History
Early History of the Brookings

According to the Brooking Society, the family in all probablity originally came from Darington, Devonshire, England. There is a hamlet called Brooking in Darington. The Brooking name was eminment in South Devonshire, Henrys in Plympton and Yealmpton, Devonshire
(The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire). LDS online lists several Henry Brookings born about 25 years apart all in York, ME beginning around 1600 which is odd since Maine wasn't really settled before the 1620s.  Also most place Henry as being from Isle of Shoals (see links on the intro page for more information on the Isles), which are on the New Hampshire and Maine border. Henry Brookings, born about 1676, married Sarah Wadley around 1701 in York, ME.  I found six children: Samuel, Sarah, Henry, Deliverence, Mercy, & Mary (LDS, also The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire).

In the above named book, it says Henry was a servant of
John Pickering in 1667.  He bought William Broad's house on Star Island in 1670, but by 1672 had married likely as a second wife, Eleanor, widow of George Knight of Scarborough and was living there.  With a young wife, Sarah, he was of Spruce Creek in 1686; Kittery grants 1694-1696.  All six children are recorded in Kittery.

The younger Henry, married
Sarah Young, abt 1716.  Sarah Young was born abt 1688 and died about 1790.  She was the child of Rowland Young and Susanna Matthews.  More on her ancestors to come.  Their children were all born in York and were named Josiah, Ebenezar, Samuel, Sarah and Daniel. The Woolwich Brookings all descended from Josiah and Ebenezar.  The Brookingses lived mainly in Murphy's Corner, a community in the southeast area of Woolwich.

The Brookings Cemetery was located on the Brookings property, west of Murphy's Corner.  It is on the shore of Brookings Bay and is difficult to find.  It was a private cemetery and is still on private property, although last I heard it is still owned by descendants of Henry.  Brookingses buried there include: Rev Ebenezar, d Feb 2 1799 age 43 SAR;  Josiah, d. April 5, 1823, age 85; Annah, w. Josiah Sr. d. April 17, 1821, age 81y; Josiah Jr, d. Oct 3, 1808, age 47y; Eunice, w. Josiah Jr., d. Sept 15, 1861, age 90y; Abner, d. May 13, 1850, age 63y; Susannah, his wife, d. April 4, 1837, age 46y; Henry, their son, d. Jan 1, 1843, age 5y 6m.
The following is from an email forwarded to me, originally from The Brooking Society in England.
"I have done some work and gone back to a very tatty chart that was drawn up in 1995.  It is quite interesting and I hope it will be of some interest. One point is that the spelling of the surname varies from Brooking, Brookin and Brookings, so all the families are related in some way.  The following is aconjectural pedigree of early American Brookings.

1.  Allyn Brooking a merchant of Totnes, died 22 April 1618.  His wife was Margaret.
2.  They had children a) Nicholas bpt Totnes 1599, b) Christopher bpt Totnes 1600, c) Thomas bpt 1601, d) John born before 1607, e) Samuel bpt Totnes 1611 f) William born about 1609.
3.  Christopher had a son William b. Totnes c.1627.  He married Philippa Champernowne c.1652.  They had a son William b. Totnes, c. 627 who married Mary Hexman (or Hickman) and bought land in Petsoe Parish, Gloucester Co. Virginia 1689.
4.  William, son of 2f) above, in 1632 "was sent by John Mason into this province of New Hampshire".
5.  This William  had 5 daughters, names not given, and two sons, a) William Brookin who lived in Rockingham, New Hampshire who had one son Godfrey and six daughters.  It is possible that the five unnamed daughters were in fact this William's daughters. b) Henry Brookings b.c. 1641 of Isle of Shoals.
6.  Henry married twice a) Eleanor, widow of George Knight b) Sarah Wadley or Wadleigh. Henry and Sarah had children a) Samuel b 1687, b) Henry b 1689 said to have been killed by Indians. c) Mary b. 1690 d) Mercy b. 1695  e) Deliverance also be. 1695 (twins) and Sarah b 1702.
7.  It would seem, therefore, that Christopher b. 1600 and William b.c1609, being brothers, their sons, William and Henry, are cousins, so William, the son of William and Philippa was at best a second cousin to Henry."

See also Benill.

Thomas Walford blacksmith, came to Charlestown, Mass. before 1628; was living in a thatched and palisaded house on the arrival of the Spragues and others from Salem in the Spring of 1628-9. In some unexplained way he incurred the displeasure of the authorities and was arrested, ordered to pay a fine of XL shillings and to leave the jurisdiction with his wife; the charge alleged is "contempt of authority and confronting officers"; this edict was given 3 May, 1631. He paid the fine by killing a wolf. He soon departed, as his goods were sequestered for debts Sept. 3, 1633. [Mass. Col. Rec.] He removed to Portsmouth.
Wm. Payne brought suit against him concerning lumber 26 (6) 1646. He and his wife Jane brought suit in Dover court 3 (8) 1648. He was a grand jury man in 1650. 50 acres of land assigned to him in Portsmouth Jan. 13, 1652. He took oath of fidelity July 2, 1657. His wife was accused of witchcraft in 1656; son Jeremy gave bonds for her; she was discharged July 2, 1657.
He died in 1667. Will dated 15 Nov. 1666, probated 27 June, 1667; beq. wife Jane; to grandchildren Thomas and Jeremiah W., John Westbrook, Mary Hingson, Mary Homes, (wife of John H.), Sara and Samuel Jones, and Mary and Hester Savidg; to daughters Peverley and Westbrook; to John Peverley and John Westbrook; to John Homes; servant John Read to be at the disposing of son in law John Westbrook. Refers to land which son in law Thomas Hingson formerly possessed.
The widow Jane deposed 27 June, 1667, ae. 69 years, that he gave a piece of land to his daughter Elizabeth Savidg (Savage) 9 years before he died, and that it was commonly called Bess Savidge's marsh. His daughters Mary, wife of Will Brookings, ae. 32, and Martha Westbrook, ae. 22, with his son Jeremiah W. and grandson John Homes, ae. 26, confirmed her testimony. The widow's thirds were laid out by order of court 27 June, 1671. The daus. Jean Goss, Hanna Jones, Mary Brookin and Eliza Savage petitioned the court to give them the overplus of the estate Sept. 7, 1681.

Henry Brookings b. abt 1641, POB prob. Isle of Shoals,  d. ?, POD prob York ME; married first bef 10 Oct 1671to Ellner Westbrook; married second in 1672 to Eleanor Knight;  married third abt 1701 in York ME, to Sarah Wadley b. Abt 1670, POB prob ME,  d. abt 1770, POD prob Woolwich ME.  By 1686 he was living at Spruce Creek, Kittery ME with his young third wife, Sarah.  As a child, Sarah was found wandering in the woods of the Woolwich area, her family's fate is unknown, but probably died in an indian attack.  She was taken to relatives in York, ME where as a young woman married Henry.  She returned with her son and his family to the area which was to become Woolwich after being gone for 60 years. Her maiden name is also spelled Wadleigh.  She lived to be 102.  children: Deliverence, Mercy, Henry, Mary & Sarah.  Sarah married second bef 1712 John Linscott.
GENERATION 2 (Henry & Sarah)

1.
Samuel Brookings, born 11 Jun 1687 in Kittery ME, died 1727; married on 21 Sep 1712 to Mary Kirke. Samuel was a carpenter & he fought in Dummer's War (The Genealogical Dictionary of ME & NH). Part of the French & Indian Wars, fought between France and Engalnd in North America, Drummer's War in Maine was from 1722 to 1727.
2.
Henry Brookings, b. 19 Mar 1688/89in Kittery ME  d. Jun 1748 in Georgetown ME, married abt 1716 in York ME to Sarah Young, b. Abt 1688 POB York ME (the child of Rowland Young and Susanna Matthews) d. 12 Dec 1768 POD in Woolwich ME. children:  Josiah, Ebenezar, Samuel, Sarah, & Daniel.  Henry and Sarah made their home in York where their children were all born, but inspired by his mother's childhood memories of the Woolwich area, returned with his family to reclaim his grandfather Wadley's land in 1738.  In June 1748, Henry took his family to the Greenleaf garrison house and with two other men went looking for stray cattle.  The three were killed by a small band of indians. LDS has Mercy Brookings as their daughter, but I know of no other references (The History of Woolwich, Maine says there were only five children, could she have stayed in York or died young?  LDS also lists a Joseph as a son of Henry and Sarah. Ed added another, Elizabeth.  Same questions as to their fate as with Mercy).
3.
Mary Brookings, born 8 Mar 1690 in York ME (LDS); accused of bastardy in 1708, child black. (Genealogical Dictionary of ME & NH, 1979)
4.
Mercy Brookings, born 17 Jan 1695 in York ME (LDS) married Sep 1713 to John Davis.(Genealogical Dictionary of ME & NH, 1979)
5. Deliverence Brookings, born 17 Jan 1695 in York ME (LDS) married 24 Jan 1716/17 to Francis Locke. child: Francis Jr.
6.
Sarah Brookings, b.20 Nov 1702 in York had a child with Enoch Dill, son named Enoch Dill also, born 19 Jun 1732 in York ME.  Some online records say Sarah and Enoch were married others say they were not.  Enoch Sr. married Ruth Parsons before 1735 according to this website which seems well documented, and says Enoch is the child of Enoch and Ruth. The Genealogical Dictionary of Maine & New Hampshire says that Enoch was Sarah's son. hmmm?
