Quote of the Day: "And the trouble is, if you risk nothing you risk even more." - Erica Jong
What is Humanities?
Humanities refers to a broad range of subjects that include, but are not limited to, architecture, languages, literature, philosophy, ethics and religion. Students become active critical thinkers who study the achievements of the human spirit and mind. They work within a variety of disciplines in order to acquire a deeper understanding of themselves, civilization and the world.
How does a student get Rio Salado credit?
A student may enroll for concurrent credit in Humanities with Rio Salado Community College and receive three college credits each semester simultaneously with the high school credit. Applications may be made to Rio Salado during the first week of the course. Upon passing the Humanities class, students will receive an English credit which is recognized by colleges and universities as an advanced level course. Juniors receive an elective credit only.
How rigorous is this course?
Humanities is a challenging course with a weighted grade status. Assignments will include reading, writing, discussion, projects, class lecture notes, film viewing and response, activity reports, research, group projects, quizzes and tests. Students will be expected to communicate their own philosophical ideas as we set the tone for our personal responses to art, music, architecture, and literature. Through ECHO, our Humanities club, we raise funds in part to help finance field trips to interesting cultural events. In the spring, students plan and present Forum 2004 during which students invite guests to address issues which the young view as the major changes facing the new millennium. The students will plan the entire seminar, contact the speakers and schedule the presentations. Even though we have many assignments (you can expect homework almost every night), students should do very well in the class providing they attend on time, keep up with the reading assignments, take thorough notes, submit assignments according to criteria and on time, and review regularly for quizzes and tests. To help them organize their time and prepare for assignments, I have distributed a syllabus and calendar which lists quizzes, tests, readings, assignments, and extra credit opportunities. In addition, I am available regularly after school for individuals needing assistance.
