Venerable Lama Samten was born in 1947 in West Tibet. He entered his uncle's monastery at the age of five and left when China invaded Tibet in 1959. He continued his studies in India under the guidance of H.E. Beru Khyentse Rinpoche and consolidated his training in three successive traditional 3 year, 3 month, 3 day solitary retreats. In 1981, H.H. 16th Gyalwang Karmapa appointed him as a resident teacher at his New Zealand seat, Karma Choeling Buddhist Monastery, Kaukapakapa.
Lama-la gave this talk at Canterbury University in 1999.

Venerable Lama Assi  completed a three year retreat in India under the guidance of His Eminence Beru Khyentse Rinpoche and Venerable Kyabje Kalu Rinpoche in the early 1960's. He was then requested to manage His Eminence Beru Khyentse Rinpoche's monastery in Mainpat for several years before taking on the responsibility of project manager for nine years of His Eminence's  new monastery in Bodhgaya. This was at the request of His Holiness the 16th Gyalwang Karmapa. On it's completion, Venerable Karma Thinley Rinpoche asked him to manage his nunnery in Kathmandu, Nepal.  In 1999, Venerable Lama Samten and Venerable Lama Shedrup requested Lama Assi to help set up and oversee a Christchurch centre.
