A Family story by Ned McDonald
Their was a neighbor rancher named Talbot and he was the game warden. Dewey had gone out a shot a deer and took it home and dressed it out (this was out of Season) a few days later, Walt and Ned were out trying to find rabbits to kill and a deer crossed their path too so Walt got out of the car and unloaded his gun into it and missed every shot, this really made him mad so it took Neds old Colt 22 short pump gun which was meant for shooting only rabbits and took one shot and hit that deer in the head and killed it, well they took it home and dressed it and Dad told Walt to go take the Hides and the Head down to the river and bury it so the warden would not know it was a recient kill. Well Walt I guess wanted to keep the Hides for something and the next day the warden came found the skins and arrested Dad, boy was he angry.

bullet William MCDONALD (photo) was born on SEP 22 1869 in Ireland. He was a Rancher - Cattle Brand was "DS" in 1892. He owned 1,640 acres in Iron Mountain, One city block in Cheyenne Wyoming-908-27th Street between 1892 and 1929 in Iron Mountain, Wyoming - Laramie County. He inherited some Land from the Estate of Henry Smith
Williams daughter Alvira died and was buried in 1905 in lot 911in Lakeview Cemetery, Cheyenne Wyoming.(He also ownd Lot #878 on 12/5/1911) He Elks Club #990 in 1902 in Cheyenne, Wyoming - Laramie County. He died on FEB 4 1951 in Los Angeles, California. He was buried on FEB 7 1951 in Rose Hills Lot 1217 Mountain View Lawn. William was 5'6 1/2" Auburn hair and Sky Blue eyes.
At around 8yrs (1875) William left Ireland landed in San Francisco then went to Fort Laramie or Fort Russell in Wyoming. He had one Sister who died at sea on the way from Ireland and a brother named Archie and another named Andy. Soon Williams mother became ill and died at the Fort, she was buried their and after the funeral his dad went for a walk to find some piece and was never seen again, it was Indian Terrirory.
Both William and Archie were raised by Gordon Ocemeaus Latham and his wife Ellen. Andy was only 9 monthes old and was adopted by another family who came thru the Fort. William tried to locate his brother for many years with no luck.
An elderly woman who lived close to the Fort agreed to take William to live with her and run errands for room and board, Archie went to live with another family who treated him very badly, Gordon Latham lived on a homestead about 45 miles from the fort, one month he went into the town to sell his trapings and he saw William walking along the road carring buckets for the lady he lived with (they had seen each other several times before) Gordon and his wife could not have children so Gordon asked William if he would like to come live with him, about that time the old lady started yelling at William, Gordon helped William into the wagon and took him with him. William later told Gordon about his brother Archie and so Gordon looked into the story and went and got him too. He raised they untill adulthood with love and care. (Story by Margaret McDonald Marty - 1985)
Mary Ellis was a niece of Gordon Latham (his sister Margarets daughter) and William met her through him. Also William brother Arch married Mary's sister Lois Miles they later divorced.
The McDonald Homestead was a small ranch Log Cabin with a dirt floor called 3 mile Ranch in which several of their children were born. Later a Larger Ranch was built which they lived in until (1912) when it burned down while Edith was cooking breakfast.
So another Ranch house was built which took a year and they moved in on New Years Day 1913 (Ned was just a baby born 11/12/1914) with 6 bedrooms and a indoor bathroom and hot and cold water. This house was built with Cinder Block, they also owned a full block in the City of Cheyenne, WY with a home. They also did bording and feeding of cattle for other ranchers one by the name of Allen.
Sometime in 1920 the family moved to California in a 1920 Anderson Red Touring Car and bought a house on 302 Comstock St.and one on 242 Newlin/Hadley in Whittier. William went back to Wyoming for a while to work the Ranch until 1937 and then returned to California.
We think Williams father served in the Army and I think that is why they went to Fort Russell. (Unfortunately Ft Laramie or Ft Russell has no records)
William had a stroke and was sick for a year with it before he died.
There was a family story about Tom Horn coming by the McDonald ranch and going up on a hill to view the Nickols ranch and at sometime later he shot and killed their 14 year old son.

bullet William Byron III MCDONALD (photo) was born on DEC 18 1917 in Iron Mountain, Wyoming - Laramie County. Bill in his youth was quite a rascal and one time he bought a Watch with credit and was late paying for it, well the store came looking for him and what they found was his Grandfather instead with the same name William McDonald, and he had a great deal of trouble convincing them it was not his but his grandson with the same name, it was not him !

Here is a small bit of grandpa. Dear Margie: you asked me to tell you some tales about Grandpa it will be quite hard because as far as I was concerned He was John Wayne and Supper Man all rolled into one. The happiest days of my youth were when I was spending my summers with Grandpa on his ranch He was quite, strict at times other times he was all love and you could feel it. To this day when I think of him I can see him riding over the hill behind the barn on Patches his favorite horse with a shovel over his shoulder going up to the upper meadows to irrigate when I was about 10 he showed me how to drive a team on the stacker, he used a over head stacker you would drive the team so
far out and it would dump the hay and then back them up to where the sweep could load it up and repeated the process. I got ambitious and drove the team to fast and made the head jump the rail. I felt so bad about fouling up I started to cry and grandpa put his arm around me and told not to worry If I had not tried to go faster He would never know that the Head was week and it mite of hurt some one. My next job as I got a little older was to grind cycle bars for the mower I hated that job with a passion till grandpa told me I did the best job he had ever seen on the cycles after that no one could of got
that job from me. He taught me how to hunt, fish, and to enjoy life. One summer I rode a motor cycle up to see him I thought I could go and bring the horses in with it He made me ship it Home he did like cars or automobiles. But Uncle Gordon was working for a Bus co. in Cheyenne Made a generator out of a huge generator off of a Bus and run by a 1horse power brig and Stratton engine which charged up a lot of batteries and run elect. To12 volt bulbs in the house no one was to touch or start it but
Grandpa he really liked it was so much better than kerosene lamps..I don't think there was any thing he could not do.
