Home 16x2 LCD 20x4 LCD

Here's my spin on Wolfy's article that appeared on www.overclockers.com.au

I used a 5.25 to 3.5 floppy adapter to hold the Oatley non-backlit 16x2 LCD.

The GREEN arrows are the four 1mm holes to hold the LCD in place.

The YELLOW arrow is the cutout to allow room for wiring.

The PINK arrow is to let the LCD sit flat as there is a resistor in the way.

The BLUE arrows are to make room for the LCD tags.

And the RED arrows were to allow the 5.25 faceplate holders room to fit.

Here is the LCD in place on the adapter. As you can see the circuit board hangs below the

adapter by about 2mm. To get it to fit I had to do the following mod to the case.

Above the 3.5 floppy you can see a recess. This allows the LCD to sit quite well forward.

The LCD in place. The overhanging circuit board sits happily in the recess.

The faceplate in place. The LCD & adapter are moved back into the case to make room for

the lugs of the faceplate to click into place. The LCD & adapter is then brought forward

and screwed into place. The faceplate had to be recessed to make room for the circuit board.

I cut the rectangle hole using a drill, and nibbler (my favourite tool). Some trimming was

done using a tool similar to a Dremmel, but mine is cheaper.

A handy dandy nibbler tool. Get yourself one. You won't believe how you did without it.

I got lazy with the contrast trimpot and positioned it over a mounting lug.

I set the contrast and decided it really is a set and forget feature.

Thus I couldn't be bothered mounting it properly.

Here's the finished product. I must confess that it was the easiest mod to do.

Most of the time was spent cutting and trimming rather than soldering.

I would like to thank Wolfy for his article that inspired me to do this.

My next one will be a 20x4 backlit display in an external case. I'm too lazy to bend down

to look at the current one as the case is under the desk.

More to follow...
