Week 47 (Jan 15th to Jan 21st)
Sunday Jan 15th, It's impossible to find curly-hair products here! I'm almost out of the stuff that my mom sends me, and I will surely have an afro by next week if I don't find a solution soon! On another note, as I suspected with the band, Mike(sax player) sent out an email today, saying that he wants to take a short hiatus from the band. He was one of the core movers and shakers with the group, so this will be a big change, although not unwelcome, as I could kind of use a break too. Mike is a writer, and wants more time to focus on writing his book, and I am a jazz singer, and want more time to focus on singing jazz!
Tuesday Jan 17th,I'm fully out of hair product, and since I kind of have an afro without hair product, I decided to get my hair flat-ironed to compensate for the lack of product! This turned out to be much more of an event than I ever expected . . . First I asked Gina, one of my Korean co-teachers for a salon reccomendation. I told her what I wanted, and had her write it down for me in Korean. Keep in mind that I've been going to the same hairdresser for 6 years in Toronto-- no one else has been allowed to touch my hair other than George for that long! I was a wee bit nervous about going to a Korean hairdresser, especially considering the numerous horror stories I've heard about misunderstandings and miscommunications. First of all, I had only intended for my hair to be washed, blowdried and flat-ironed. When I got there, they put chemical relaxer in my hair, which I did not want. Then they washed it, decided that they didn't do a good enough job, and proceeded to chemically relax 2 more times. Then they blowdried my hair, and flat-ironed it, which of course takes forever. By this point, I had already been at the salon for 4 hours, and I was going out of my mind with boredom, plus I was late to meet friends. I thought at this point that I was finally done, but no! They wet it down with some lotion stuff, and then washed it again. Well, of course, when you get my hair wet, it goes curly again! So they had to flat-iron it all over again . . . the whole thing took 5 frickin hours! Plus now I don't know how long it will take for my hair to go back to normal. It does look really good however. It's very long. By this point, I was incredibly late, and I still had to go home first to change and warm up my voice. Here's what I was late for: Vance, the keyboard player in the funk band, decided to host kind of a musician's forum at his apartment. The idea is to get together a bunch of players and writers to talk, exchange musical ideas, and maybe work on some projects together. A good idea in theory, but what I do is so different from the other musicians I know in Daegu, I suspect that it's not going to be too musically productive for me. In any case, the night ended up being a really good hang, with some musical sharing, but mostly just talking. As far as the funk band, it looks like there might not be a band anymore . . usually we rehearse on Tuesday nights, but it sounds like Vance is intending to make the forum a weekly thing, and it doesn't sound like anyone is objecting. There could be some tension coming soon between band members . . .
Thursday Jan 19th,Today we took our kids on a field trip to Woobang Tower Land (the amusement park). Woobang Tower Land has a hill with fake snow that you can toboggan down. This is pretty special for the kids, because it never snows enough in Korea for kids to actually go sledding. What's funny about it from a Canadian perspective, is that sledding turns into this organized, refereed kind of thing, kind of like going down slides at a water park! Regardless, it was pretty fun.
Friday Jan 20th, Tonight we had a Chilgok night, with all the Wonderland and Reading Town(the new school) foreign teachers. We've got a crew of 6 now, which is a nice healthy number. It's nice to not have to go downtown all the time to see friends. Plus, now that Char and Anna are gone, I don't really feel like hanging out downtown these days anyway.
Saturday Jan 21st, Today I had a self-imposed exile from downtown. I made a conscious decision not to answer my phone at all, and to stay in and practise, and be focused on music. I feel like I've had so many distractions over the course of the year, and I'm worried that my mind is being dulled with all the stimuli that I find in Korea. My quiet day was everything I wanted it to be.
