Monday Dec 5th,I've turned into a cell phone person. In less than a month, I've become one of those people! I was always so adamant that I would never have a cell phone, because it's not necessary to be always reachable, and because it's rude to interrupt real conversations with people to talk on your cell phone, and so on. But here I am, using it all the time, texting people more than I talk to them, etc. Next thing I know, I'm going to start listening to mainstream pop or something too, I mean I did sell out on the cell phone issue after all! |

Wednesday Dec 7th,Tonight, I made it out to the Commune open mic night for the first time in a long time, as our funk band rehearsal ended early tonight. I was surprised to realize that I didn't recognize half of the people in the bar! I guess while I've been hiding out with the funk band, and my already established group of friends, new people have been pouring into Daegu, and I didn't even notice. I'm kind of at the point now where I don't really want to make any more new friends for awhile. I've got enough on my plate, and I'm
leaving for Seoul soon anyway. But there is quite a gaping hole that Jason and Evan used to fill, and Anna, Charlotte and Ali are all leaving at the end of December. That's almost an entire circle of friends. It's a good thing that I've gotten so close to the guys in the funk band!

Friday Dec 9th,Tonight I took Ryan and Lindsey downtown for their first real night out. It was really fun to watch them experience it for the first time, especially now that I'm an "old hand". I took them to Itaewon, which has always been a foreigner hang-out (more so, an army hang-out at times), and they were shocked to find somewhere that was predominantly foreign. Lindsey's comment was "Are we still in Korea?" I guess you forget after a while how easy it is to ignore Korean culture entirely. I mean, we have so much access to
Western culture that we could completely immerse ourselves in it, and not even realize that we're in Korea until we had to take a cab somewhere! It's mostly because of this that I haven't picked up much Korean-- I haven't had to! I expect that my crowd will be much more mixed in Seoul, as jazz communities are usually small, and I imagine that there aren't a lot of foreigners in this jazz community!

Saturday Dec 10th,Tonight I had dinner at Ariana's with Charlotte and Anna and the crew, possibly for the last time. Ariana's is a big German style restaurant/brewery that offers a buffet plus all you can drink until 9pm kind of thing every Saturday night. There's also a live dance band (I think they're Filipino), and lots of fun crazy atmosphere. It's sad to think that I'm starting to do things for the last time with my favourite girls. |
