Week 40- Y3(Dec 9th to Dec 15th)
Sunday:Lazy day. Lunch at an Indian food buffet with Garanand then a movie at a DVD bang. I should be working, but I'm too tired and will gladly take the "chill"time instead!
Monday:I'm sick! AGAIN! This is crazy, I haven't been fullyhealthy for a month now.
Wednesday: Today was my last day to teach my secon year Seoulstudents. I'm really going to miss some of them! Especially Eun Young, who is going to Humber Collegenext year; so I guess I'll be seeing her in Torontoinstead anyway . . . Today was kind of sad, and therewere a lot of tears from my students (and though notin front of them, from me too!)Also going on at school: apparently there's some kindof legal problem with PaekChe right now. Legally,we're not supposed to teach any classes in Seoul. Some kind of weird school zoning laws. Anyway, apparently some other schools have been trying to getour school in trouble for this, so we're trying to beextra careful these days. In fact, I had tocompletely change the format of my exams and do themone on one instead of in front of the whole class. Somany weird laws in this country! So Helen had me practising our dance routine with thecostume on tonight, and I was kind of like "you wantme to wear THAT?" The costume has a black and purplelace and sequin half top with a tiny little purplesequined skirt that flares all the way out every timeI spin. Looks like I'm going to be scrambling to finda pair of bicycle shorts to wear underneath . . .
Thursday:More goodbyes. I stayed late in Iksan to attend theannual vocal party at the samgyeopsal restaurant (ha. Ie, the only restaurant in their tiny little collegevillage!) This one was especially hard for me, as I'mlosing Min Kyoung, who is my prize student. I'mreally hoping that she will keep in touch.
Friday:Today I actually had to cancel my privates, because Ihad so much shopping to do in preparation for thesalsa competition! Accessories, makeup, getting apedicure, hunting endlessly for bicycle shorts, whichby the way took me forever to find and ended upcosting $40 at Calvin Klein! Grr. And then a longpractise session with Andy-- we had a little bit of anargument tonight! I get frustrated with him becausehe's very plain and stone-faced when he dances-- nostage presence or style whatsoever. Maybe it's alittle sneaky of me, but I was actually hoping to gethim angry or frustrated enough to give ANY kind ofemotion. I think it worked . . .After practise, I popped into the Rocky MountainTavern for a little bit to see Garan's band compete inthe Battle of the Bands. Even with foreigncompetitions here, it all seems rigged! Even thoughGaran's band was the best, not to mention the mostestablished and the most popular in Seoul, anotherband took the spot because they had some "friends" onthe judging panel.
Saturday:Competition day! Andy and I arrived at the studio inthe afternoon for one last lesson with Helen, and thenI had my makeup done by another student. Withdancing, there's so many little details to think aboutthat I don't have to worry about with singing-- I hadto get a manicure and a pedicure to match the costume, loads of makeup and shimmery stuff, even makeup on mylegs to hide any bruises-- it's a lot of effort for a3 minute routine!Anyway, Helen kept us all in the back room so that noone would see the costumes; so I didn't see any of theother couples dance. But when Andy and I were calledup, I was so nervous my legs were shaking! Theroutine went pretty well; a few little mistakes (atone point Andy's hand actually got caught in myhair!), but we hid them very well. And . . . we won! Yeah! Apparently we exhibited the most style and themost difficult routine (I mean, good god, it involvedjumps and dips and swivels and so on . . .) Since Ilove to win, I was pretty thrilled. We all celebratedpretty hard tonight! Because I was kind of shy aboutthe costume thing, the only friend I invited to watchme was Garan, and he really enjoyed it as well (I mayhave converted yet another person to the "salsadoctrine"!) Anyway, Helen and I have become prettyclose-- I'm her favourite student by far, and she evencalls me "Baby Helen", on account of my styling andsassiness. If anyone had told me a year ago that I'dbe dancing in salsa competitions and winning them, Inever would have believed it!
