Week 39- Y3(Dec 2nd to Dec 8th)
Sunday:I have so much work to do and all I want to do is curlup on the couch with a good book! Ah, procrastination. . .
Tuesday:Finally! The homework has been conquered and marked .. . now it's time to mark the final exams. One andhalf more weeks of school left, and then hellovacation!
Wednesday:Andy cancelled our salsa lesson at the last minutetoday, and I was pretty pissed off, since I wasalready in Itaewon, and we really needed the practisetime. He can be very inconsistent as a dancer--sometimes perfect, but sometimes really off his game;so it's been really annoying me lately, especiallysince the salsa competition is next weekend! In other news, Garan is back from New York! Unfortunately, our band had some scheduling conflictsthis week, and we couldn't have a rehearsal, but Garanand I met up tonight anyway for a few quick drinks, and perfume delivery (I had asked him to get me CocoChanel at the airport where it would be cheaper!)
Thursday:On top of all the other stuff I'm doing these days,I've also been cramming for a Korean test that I wassupposed to have tomorrow. It might be anunderstatement to say that I'm a little too busy tostudy right now, so I wasn't exactly disappointed whenSage called today to cancel our lesson for tomorrow! One more week to study (not that I'm going to have anyextra time next week either
Friday:Tonight, after finishing judging student recitals, Iwent to Dongdaemun Market to meet up with Andy-- wehave to find costumes for the competition. Dongdaemunis this massive massive clothing market that justsprawls on forever. It can be really fun and cheap, but it can also be a total bitch if you don't knowyour way around it too well. (It's also open and busy24 hours a day) At first we weren't having any luckat all finding anything appropriate. Finally we hiton a floor of costume-y stuff, but it was all supertacky and cheaply made. I felt kind of funny beingdown there, as I'm pretty sure I know who the mainclientele is for those kind of dresses . . . anyway,we didn't find anything that I liked at all. Sorandomly in a completely different section of themarket, I found only one stall that had cocktail-ishdresses. I ended up buying a royal blue satin dresswith gold sequin straps. It's not exactly what I washoping for, but I suppose it will have to do.
Saturday:Today was a meeting for the full time professors, followed by a meeting for all of the teachers. PaekChe is getting a recording studio! This is goingto be very exciting for the students AND for theteachers-- it could potentially save me a lot of moneyin studio fees if I want to record an album! I wasalso happy that Jae indirectly addressed some problemsI've been having with the other vocal teachers whilein our full-staff meeting-- first of all, it seemsthat the vocal teachers have trouble keeping theirlesson schedule the way it should be. They often goovertime and end up getting really behind schedule andthen cancelling or making the students miss otherclasses. Also, there's one teacher in particular whocancels lessons way too often. The other problem wasa little different-- So Im, who was kind of sort of incharge before I started teaching here, was trying totake some control over how the final exams work forall the vocal teachers. Jae nipped this in the bud bystating explicitly that final tests should be donewithin the lesson, and that if there were any otherquestions, ASK ME! Finally. I'm tired of the othervocal teachers a) not being good enough and b) notteaching the way their job requires them to. Afterthe big meeting, all of us had a lunch of shabu shabu, which is originally Japanese, and involves mushroomsand thin slices of beef with a bunch of other thingsbeing cooked in a soup at the table. After you eatall the beef out of it, you put noodles into the soupto absorb the broth, and then when that's finished, the waitress comes over and puts rice and egg in thepot to make rice porridge with the leftover soup. It's awesome but way too filling! At the lunch I was really happy to see Su Bok, SoYoung and Jung Hee, three of my former students fromthe hagwon are now teaching at the JASS hagwon in thesuburbs of Seoul. It's pretty awesome to have somegood former students become your colleagues, and I wasglad to see that they're successfully kicking offtheir careers. After lunch, I headed over to Itaewon early-- I wantedto see if I could find any better costumes. And Idid! I bought a dark purple halter dress. Andy and Ihad re-scheduled our lesson for today, but once again,he was late, so we lost out on half of the lesson;plus he was totally spaced out and not dancing well,so Helen could see that we weren't going to getanywhere today, and cut the lesson early. Gah! Andy, get your crap together! After dance, I headed over to catch a little bit ofNate's gig with a Grateful Dead cover band, and thenover to Itaewon to check out Garan's other band atFree Bird, and then Funky Funky. We stayed prettylate and danced a lot, but when the crowd startedgetting extra rowdy, Garan started getting extraparanoid about his double bass being trampled on, andwe bailed out of there around 4am.
