Week 37- Y3(Nov 18th to Nov 24th)
Sunday:Happy birthday to me! Unfortunately I feel prettyterrible, plus I seem to be developing a mild eyeinfection in addition to the cold, so I've spent theentire day in bed pretty much. It's a good thing Ialready had 2 nights of partying to celebrate mybirthday. So I've decided that 26 sounds too close to 30, sofrom now on, I'm turning 25 for every birthday I havefrom here on in . . . Wow, feels awesome to be 25(again!)!
Monday:I feel awful. I've got the head cold from hell, andKorean medicine turns me into an absolute space cadet-I totally should have called in sick today! As I was waiting for the school bus back to Seoulafter work today, I saw something that horrified me--our school is on a mountain, and it's kind of trickyto make the turns and what not, especially in a bus. So this bus driver comes barreling up the road, obviously not paying attention at all, and he almosttook out me and several other students-- we all had toleap out of the way. Unfortunately one girl had herback to the bus and didn't see it coming. She was hitfull on by the bus! Fortunately she was stillstanding afterwards, so I don't think she had anylife-threatening injuries, but it was a pretty awfulthing to see. The buses are supposed to drive thestudents not hit them. And especially on a trickyroad, you'd think the driver would be smart enough toactually look where he's going. I hope he gets firedand sued.
Thursday:I found out that two of my favourite students aredating today, and I found out in the cutest way-- Ihad to stay late in Iksan to adjudicate graduationrecitals, and while I was adjudicating Su Jin'srecital, he made Jin come up onstage so he could singher a love song. So sweet. It also makes me reallyhappy to see two of my favourite students together. On another note, this seems to be the week of traffichell for me. The bus ride back to Seoul ended uptaking 4 hours, even late at night. Why? Because ourbus got stuck right behind a 3 truck pileup. We werewaiting for an hour, and there were so many policecars, ambulances, fire trucks that I couldn't countthem anymore. Why why why must Koreans drive sorecklessly?? Why doesn't anybody ever learn theirlesson?
Friday:More recital adjudication. It's a good thing I getpaid extra for all this, otherwise I would be prettypissed off. Actually, the first recital was by thebest bass student in the school, and it turns out thathe's a really skilled composer and arranger as well,so that one was enjoyable, but oh god, the other 4hours were tedious . . .
Saturday:To Pohang today for American Thanksgiving at Jason andSteph's place. I'm still pretty sick, so I slept in,then went to Krispy Kreme to get gazillions of donutsfor Jason (he's obsessed, and Pohang is too small forKrispy Kreme!) and then headed to the bus station. The station was pretty jammed with people, as this isapparently kinchi making weekend-- ie the last weekendbefore it's supposed to start getting really cold, soall the families traditionally get together to makekimchi and then store (originally kimchi was buried inspecial pots in the ground to ferment it). So I hadto wait to get the bus, and then the bus ended uptaking an hour and a half longer due to really badtraffic. Arrgh! When I got there though, the party was in full swing, and there were all the fixings of a perfectThanksgiving dinner-- turkey, stuffing, cranberrysauce, mashed potatoes, pumpkin and apple pies. Iguess Costco is pretty amazing for finding hard tofind foods in Korea. It also helps that Jason is thebest homemaker I know and the perfect person to hostThanksgiving dinner. After dinner, the boys playedpoker and the girls gossiped over pie, and I evenmanaged to impress some Koreans with my Koreanspeaking skills! (I love that people are alreadystarting to notice the big improvement!) All in all,I suppose it was worth braving the crazy traffic . . .
