Week 36- Y3(Nov 11th to Nov 17th)
Monday:There have been a lot of renovations going on at our Iksan campus, and sometimes it makes my life here alittle difficult! For instance, last week I came intomy office and found a window pane missing where theyhad ripped out the old air conditioner. And thereally annoying constant drilling that has become thebackdrop for all of my classes . . . Today was theweirdest though-- I was in the middle of teaching myjazz choir when one of my students happened to lookbehind and said "Teacher, steam!" I had no idea whatthe hell she was talking about until I looked over andrealized that the entire back half of the classroomwas filled with smoke! I thought the school was goingto burn down! We called the office people down, andit turned out to be nothing, but it's still no fun totry to teach a vocal class in a room filled with smog. . . I'll be thrilled when these renovations areover.
Wednesday:Today ended up being another one of those crazy 16hour days for me. After my normal classes, I had toteach some makeup lessons, and then attend one of mystudents' graduation recitals. Eun Young was mystudent last semester, and she has been in my jazzchoir for some time now. And . . . Eun Young was justaccepted to Humber College! Yay! My first student togo . . .After Eun Young's recital, I had to run over to salsaclass in Itaewon, and from there I had to rush over toHaebangchon for band practise. We had a little bit of a crisis tonight . . . we'vebeen looking for a keyboardist or another guitarist tofill out our sound a little bit more, as it's a littlethin with only one rhythm instrument. With this inmind, Garan had invited this guitar player named Johnto jam with us tonight. I knew about it, but I guesswe forgot to tell Trevor and Nate. Normally itshouldn't have been too big a deal, but John is quitetalented and also quite overbearing musically, andNate unfortunately misinterpreted John being there asa sign that we were trying to kick him out of theband! Holy crap! A very long band discussion thentook place over whiskey and thankfully crisis wasaverted, but good god! And holy crap, I really needto sleep!
Friday:Tonight was kind of my fake birthday party for Garan'ssake, as he's flying to New York tomorrow morning fora 2 week vacation. So we met up with Nate and someother friends at Woodstock, drank a lot of whiskey, ate at a "pojang matcha" in the middle of the night(Pojang matchas are these little food tents thatusually get set up on the side of the street. They dodishes like fried chicken, omelettes, basically afterthe bar kind of food, but better and cheaper!), thenwe basically stayed up all night until Garan had toleave at 8:30 am-- he's got a policy against sleepingthe night before international flights!Really fun night, but my throat is really starting tohurt, and I'm sneezing an awful lot . . . the cold iscoming, and it's unavoidable!
Saturday:Ugh. The cold is definitely here, and I feel likeass! However, I had to suck it up for first, salsaclass, and then my birthday party!I met some friends for dinner at my favouriterestaurant in Seoul, Loca Loca. Loca Loca is a LatinAmerican restaurant that does the most amazing seabream-- yummy! Add freshly made sangria to the mix,and you've got a very happy birthday girl. As thenight wore on, my crowd got so big that we had to moveupstairs because there wasn't room for all of us onthe main floor anymore! It was a combination of mymusic friends, my Daegu-connection friends and mysalsa friends, plus a few private students; and I wasquite happy at how well everyone mixed and got along. I've always to get all of my groups of friendstogether and tonight was proof that it can work! After Loca Loca, we headed over to Club Caliente withthe intent of doing some salsa dancing, butunfortunately they were just getting ready to close,so we did one round of drinks, Andy and I practisedfor awhile, and then we moved on to Rocky MountainTavern to meet up with another friend's band. I wasreally happy to have a lot of good friends around, butby this point, I was actually starting to feel reallysick (Tylenol Cold started wearing off!) so Icertainly wasn't the last woman standing tonight-- Ileft my friends still partying it up at about 3am!
