Week 24 - Y2 (Aug 13th to Aug 19th) |

Monday Aug 14th,
Having been stuck on a plane for 15 hours next to some
crazy librarian lady, and then lugging around 2 heavy
suitcases, a backpack and a laptop to downtown Seoul
from the airport, I am certainly not in the greatest
mood to be back. I stepped out of the airport, and
realized that the sky was mud brown, and that the
weather was being like cooked into a soup, and I kind
of said to myself, "Good god what have I done again?"
Maybe it's the weird disoriented feeling that comes
from a) jet lag, b) stepping off a plane into a
completely different and surreal world; but I am so
missing Toronto right now. Blue skies, lovely
weather, good music, good friends . . .

Wednesday Aug 16th,
Still crazy disoriented, but feeling slightly better
about being back. I've been growing through 12 hour
energry spurts where I'll plan my curriculum
obsessively, and then I just kind of crash for a few
hours. At least jet lag is good for productivity, at
least in my case.
However, I have never been so hot in my life. I've
been literally camped out in front of my fan for the
past two days, and while I've been too cheap to get
air con in the past, I might have to bite the bullet
this time around.

Friday Aug 18th,
I went to Daegu on the KTX today-- if anything would
make me feel normal in Korea, it would certainly be a
trip to Daegu!
I met Ryan, Linz, Ange and some new friends of theirs
after work at Wa Bar in Chilgok. It was so good to
see them! We spontaneously decided to have an
apartment crawl for that night, which I ended up
having to bow out of, because I had to go downtown to
meet Phil, whom I hadn't seen in 4+ months. We went
to a new jazz club in Daegu (the old one has since
closed down. In fact, I'm shocked that so much has
changed in Korea since I've been gone. Even within my
own neighbourhood, so many new stores have cropped up,
and others disappeared), and then of course we went
over to Commune, where I ran into Evan, Ali, and so
on-- good times! Welsh Katie, who left Daegu last
summer, is now back for another go-around, and it was
great to see her after a whole year! It seems like
nobody can get enough of this place-- even Ryan and
Lindsey are talking about doing a second year
(definitly not at Wonderland though), and Rob is
talking about coming back as well. At least I'll
never be lonely here!

Saturday Aug 19th,
This morning, we did our traditional haejung guk
hangover remedy breakfast. I had forgotten how
incredibly effective it is . . .
We had originally planned to go to Spa Valley to use
the big swimming pool, and then have a barbecue, but
it poured rain all day, so instead we had the laziest
afternoon possible.
In the evening we went to the former Gypsey Rock (now
called G2) to meet up with Charlotte, see her
boyfriend's band play, and see Phil, Werner and Mike
play a set! (my old bandmates from the Daegu Tones
days) Good show, good friends.
Afterwards, we went to Organ Bar, this great bar in
Daegu that's been relatively undiscovered as of yet
(this is a good thing, I keep on expecting to find it
overrun with soldiers someday). Keeping in
traditional Korean partying form, we didn't leave
until well past dawn. Since Charlotte lives pretty
much right downtown, Katie and I ended up crashing at
her place for the night.
Now I definitly feel better about being back in Korea!
