NATIONAL COSTUME SHOW
THE NATIONAL COSTUME CONTROVERSY
.HOMETOWN DECISION FAVORS LATINAS

The  National  Costume  Show  for Miss Universe 2002  is  over and pageant fans all over are crying, "Foul!"  Best  Costume  went  to  Miss  Colombia, Vanessa  Mendoza;  1st  Runner-Up  went  to  the hometown  girl,  Miss  Puerto Rico, Isis Casalduc; and   2nd   Runner-Up   was   awarded   to   Ruth Ocumarez,   Miss   Dominican   Republic.   Three  things  to note -  first, all three winners were from Latin  countries. Second,  the  host  country  is  in second  place,  and third, all three winners did not have  the best  costumes  in  the house. Whatever happened to the  better  costumes of the delegates from Venezuela, the Philippines, India, Korea and many  others? A hometown decision greatly influ-enced  by  an  all  Puerto  Rican  panel  of judges? Whatever the  reasons behind the judges' decision, one   thing   remains  clear  :  politics  will  always
remain  a   part   of  the  Miss  Universe  Pageant!
