Chikin Bo

Master Soken practices Chikin Bo

History:  The kata Chikin Bo was originated by a samurai named Chikin Kraka, aka Tsuken Mantaka.  He taught this kata in Nishihara village.  This kata dates back to the 1800s.  It has been said that Soken did not learn any kobudo from his uncle Nabe Matsumura, therefore he sought out instruction from others in kobudo.  It is said that he studied under Master Ushi no Tanme, of the Nishihara Village.  Master Tanme had learned the Chikin Bo kata directly from Chikin Kraka.  Some sources state that Master Soken trained and learned this kata directly from Chikin Kraka.  This kata is also known as Tsuken Bo.  Chikin Bo teaches students to attack and defend with the bo staff.  They learn to disarm a bo staff from an opponent and how to use the full length of the bo staff to their advantage.
