Rohai

Meaning: This kata has been giving the meaning “Vision of the White Heron”, or “Vision of the White Crane”, "Mirror of the Soul", or "Clear Mirror".

History: While the originator of this kata is unknown, it is believed to have been developed in Tomari Village, and a Tomari-te form. There are basically two different versions of this kata. The Matsumura Rohai is believed to have been modified or influenced by Bushi Matsumura. Itosu is created as having created the Rohai Ichi, Ni, and San. This kata was introduced into the Matsumura Seito system by Hohan Soken. Many believe that Master Soken only introduced Rohai Ichi, with possible Kise having introduced the Ni and San version of this kata. These are relatively short forms and contain a lot of the same techniques in each form.

What to Get Out of This Kata: This kata really works on the speed of hand techniques. It helps to increase stability and accuracy in striking. Students learn to effectively shift away from an attack and block that attack at the same time. They will learn to escape a wrist grab by an opponent as well.
