A tribute to the World AIDS Foundation.
If AIDS touches anyone, it touches us all. Help save a life.
World AIDS: I care, Do you?

WHY SHOULD WE CARE?

  • In Michigan, nearly 6,000 residents have died of AIDS, at least 13,000 residents are living with HIV/AIDS today, and there are 1,100 new infections every year.
  • In the US, over 850,000 adults and children are estimated to be living with HIV/AIDS: 670,000 are men; 170,000 are women; 10,000 are children. One in three of those infected with HIV do not know they are infected.
  • In the US, one teen is infected with HIV each hour. Young people account for one-fourth of all new infections each year.
  • In the US, AIDS is now the fifth leading cause of death for people 25 to 44 years of age, and 50% of all new infections are among young people under age 25.
  • As of the end of 2000, an estimated 36.1 million people worldwide -- 34.7 million adults and 1.4 million children younger than 15 years -- were living with HIV/AIDS. In 2000, more than 6,500 young people aged 15 to 24 became infected with HIV every day -- that is, about five every minute.
  • In 2000, 3 million people died from AIDS. That's over 8,000 deaths per day.

WORLD AIDS DAY

The World AIDS Foundation is keeping up the fight against HIV and AIDS. It's about supporting the people living with HIV/AIDS, fighting the prejudice faced by people living with HIV/AIDS and making people in power take action. Because of your support for World AIDS Foundation, we can win the battles in the war against HIV and AIDS like promoting safer sex, changing attitudes, raising awareness and the search for a vaccine.

But we can't do any of it without you. There are 3 simple ways you can help us:
  1. Find out more about HIV and AIDS (1-800-872-2437)
  2. Donate your time or money to your local HIV/AIDS organization (1-800-872-2437)
  3. Wear the Red Ribbon as a symbol of HIV and AIDS awareness.

THE RED RIBBON

The Red Ribbon is the international symbol of AIDS awareness; a symbol of respect for those who have died of AIDS, of concern for those living with it, and reminder to us all of the constant need to keep up the fight against AIDS. It's a symbol of how great achievements begin with small actions. The Red Ribbon came into being 9 years ago as the idea of a small HIV charity, Visual AIDS, in New York. Now, it's recognized the world over as the symbol of AIDS awareness. But that's only because the people who wear it - people like you - show their support through speaking up and taking action on HIV and AIDS. The Red Ribbon...it's your first step in the fight against AIDS.

KBG AIDS FUND

All the money raised by Kappa Beta Gamma will be donated directly to the World AIDS Foundation, under UNAIDS, and is tax deductible.

WHAT IS UNAIDS?

As the HIV/AIDS epidemic continues to progress (each day, over 8,500 people are newly infected with HIV, the virus that causes AIDS), its estimated that over 22 million people are currently living with HIV/AIDS. Meeting the complex long-term challenge of HIV/AIDS calls for an expanded response. In recognition of this concern, the Joint United Nations Program on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) was established in January 1996. UNAIDS is a co-sponsored program that brings together the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the World Bank in a common effort against the epidemic. It is the first program of its kind in the UN system: a small program with a large outreach and the potential to lever significant resources and action through the creation of strategic partnerships. As the main advocate for global action on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS leads, strengthens and supports an expanded response aimed at preventing the transmission of HIV, providing care and support, reducing the vulnerability of individuals and communities to HIV/AIDS, and alleviating the impact of the epidemic.

In a world united for the fight against AIDS, the sisters of KBG thank you for all your support.
