When Never Is Forever Chapter 2 Sandra yawned, she hated waiting for anything, especially the phone. It was about a week after the dance and Nick had said he'd call the first chance he got. Not that she was waiting for him to call, she was actually waiting for a long-distance call. Every month, she waited by the phone. Her friend Mindy had moved to Oklahoma and they had set up the times for her to call so that they'd be sure Sandra would be there. Every month on the second weekend around noon. Mindy was always running late so Sandra always wound up staring at the phone. Not that she was stupid, she took the cordless out back so she could get a tan while waiting. After checking for the forth time to make sure the ringer was on and the line wasn't occupied, Sandra put on her headphones and kept an eye on the phone (one of those with a flashing light when it rings). The day after the dance, Sandra had bought herself a Backstreet Boys CD, she found that it had some dance and that she actually liked some of the balleds. Sandra was drifting off to sleep when she noticed the phone's light flashing. She quickly pulled down her headphones to her neck and picked up the phone. "Hello, Mindy?" she said into the phone as soon as she picked it up and pressed the button. "Uh...no, I'm not Mindy but I'm glad to hear talk to you too." Nick said, laughing. "Oh hi, Nick. I'm sorry but Mindy was supposed to call twenty minutes ago." she replied in her sweetest voice. "Oh...well if your expecting a phone call..." he started. "No!" Sandra exclaimed quickly "I mean...If she hasn't called yet she probably forgot." "Ok...So is Mindy that girl from the dance?" Nick asked. "No, that was Janie. Mindy lives in Oklahoma. I'd rather talk to you anyway." she said, nervous about talking to him now that she knew for sure he was a famous guy. She thought it was weird, she'd had no trouble talking to him before she knew who he was. "What's that music I hear?" Nick had smile in his voice. Sandra suddenly realized the headphones were still on and close to the receiver. She quickly turned the music off. "Umm.....Just music." she said, afraid he would think she really was a crazed fan. "Just music huh? Sounded pretty familiar to me." he replied knowingly. "Ok, ok. I got your CD to see how you sound! Is that such a crime? If so, lock me away officer!" something about this guy made Sandra hyper and made her sound stupid. "Uh...you have the right to remain silent. Anything you say or do can be held against you in a court of law. If you with hold this right you have a right to an attorney or one will be appointed by court. Or something like that." Nick joked. Sandra couldn't help but laugh. "You sound so real!" she squealed. "Thank you, thank you. I'd like to except this award on behalf of all those cop shows on basic Tv." he continued his joke. "Uh huh. What exactly is this 'award'?" Sandra asked. "Uh...the Sandra Marie seal of approval!" he replied grandly. "Oh, well you won that award long ago. Where are you?" she asked, she knew he couldn't possibly still be in the same area, after all, super-stars travel alot. "Still in Florida, we're on a short break. I would have called sooner but, I didn't want to seem to pushy or forward or whatever. Anyway, Brian bet me I couldn't go a week without calling a girl, so I won." Nick explained. "So, your like still in the same area? How much did ya win off of it?" she asked. "Well, yes, I'm very much in the same area and twenty dollars." he replied. "How close are you? Do you know where I live? Are you anywhere near the mall?" Sandra asked. "What is this, Twenty questions? I'm very close, I know where you live, and I'm as close to the mall as you are." Nick explained. Just then, Sandra heard footsteps outside the fence. "Uh.. I think I heard something outside my gate!" she whispered into the phone. "Well then, go see what it is!" Nicks voice whispered back. She looked at the phone strangly, why was he whispering? She shrugged and got up and went to the gate. She pulled it open quickly. Nick stood there, holding in one hand roses and in the other hand, a cell phone. Sandra was so surprized that she just hugged him. Then she remembered she was only wearing her faded blue bikini. She ran away and grabbed a towel, wrapping it around her as she came back. "What are you doing here?" she asked into the phone. "I just wanted to come see if you wanted to go to the beach with me. You certainly seem dressed for it." Nick replied into the cellphone. Sandra pressed the button on the phone, hanging it up. Nick did the same with his cellphone. "I don't know what to say, no ones ever done anything this romantic for me before." she said in shock. "That's okay, just say you'll come to the beach with me, get in the car, and drive off with me." he said grinning. "Ok, I'll go, but let me get some clothes on over my suit." Sandra said demandingly. "Oh, I like the suit though." he whined jokingly. "Well, the next you'll see it is when, and if I go swimming." she replied heading for the house. "This isn't the beach I had in mind" Sandra said staring out the windshield. "What's wrong with it?" he asked, actually knowing what she meant. "There's no people on it, and there doesn't seem to be anyone for a few miles." she replied with raised eyebrows. "I don't see anything wrong with that." Nick said as he got out of the car. Before she could reply, he went to the back and got out the biggest picnic basket she'd ever seen complete with a checkerd blanket. "Wow. Someones quite the romantic, now isn't he?" she said as she too got out of the car. "Only with girls I like, and I know what I like." he said smiling at her. "So do I." she replied. She caught up with him, grabbed his arm, he turned and she kissed him lightly on the lips. "Wow, what was that for?" he asked when the kiss ended. "I dunno, for being romantic, I guess" she replied and started to walk ahead of him as if to race. He quickly walked ahead of her and they both starting walking faster and faster as if in a race. Finally, when they both realized they really had no place to race to, Sandra just plopped down in the sand in the place where she was. Nick laid down the blanket next to her, and after setting up he motioned for her to move to the blanket. She pretended to be suspicious, but then acted like she was magically attracted by the food. "What a spread." she said looking at all the food. "I didn't know what you liked or what you were allergic to, so I brought most normal picnic food." he explained. "I'll say.... Your really going all out for me aren't you? Why?" she said looking suspicious again. "Because I like you.....and because that Rich guy showed me how desirable you are." he said jokingly. "Ugh. Do not even mention that name! I'm so glad he's not here! He's probably be trying to drag me away by the arm!" Sandra exclaimed, trying to act overly dramtic. "I'm glad your nosy friends aren't here." Nick said. "Now dig in! I worked hard on this food!" "You worked hard on this food?" she said, eyeborws raised. "Ok, ok. So I had a little help.....okay alot of help....okay, so I didn't make any of it, you happy?" Nick said, changing his wording each time she gave him a doubtful look. "Of course, it's the thought that counts.....mmmmm, cherry pie...." Sandra said. "Note to self, she likes cherry pie." he said doing a Norm MacDonald impression. "Note to Nick, she likes anything cherry except those yucky sticky candy things." she said joking back at him. "I didn't have my imaginary tape-recorder on!" he said defensivly. "Too bad, Norm." she said, picking up a sandwich and looking inside. "Note to self, your girlfriends a psycho." Nick said into his imaginary tape-recorder. "Girlfriend?" she squeaked. "You silly, I mean, if you don't mind being called that." Nick said blushing. "Not at all, in fact, I'm quite honored." she said looking touched. "I'm the honored one, I'm giving Richy some competition." "He was never even in the running, tried to buy me with gifts." she said as if in warning. Nick looked flustered momentarily, then tried to move something from his pocket to the basket. "What is that?" Sandra asked reaching for the basket. "N-n-nothing" he said pulling the basket out of her reach. "I'll be the judge of that!" she sprang at the basket and pulled out a small box. She opened it slowly and saw..... |
