Chapter 5

Kristin entered her apartment, turned on the lights and tossed her suitcases on the floor. She sighed. It was good to be home. She headed over to her answering machine and hit play.

"K! I'm home! Boy did we have fun! Can you believe that whole BSB thing? Anyway, I'm wiped. Call me in the morning!" Mattie had left a message.

There was a message from her mom, one from her cousin and one from Gillian. She decided she could call everyone in the morning. She fell onto the couch and turned on the t.v. "Providence" was on. The phone rang.

"Hello?"

"Is Kristin there please?" a male voice asked.

"This is she," she replied, somewhat recognizing his voice.

"Hi, it's Kevin."

"Wow, Kevin, hi! How are you?"

"I'm doing well, thanks. When did you get in?"

"Actually, I walked the door about ten minutes ago. You have good timing!"

"I had it thought out in my head. I travel a lot, obviously, so I could figure out how long it would take you to get home.....but I digress."

Kristin laughed. "Too funny."

"Glad to be back?"

"Yes and no. It's good to be back home, but that means back to school and work on Monday. Only a month or so left, then graduation! Thank god. But it's freezing here Kev!"

His low chuckle rumbled through the phone. "I'm from Kentucky. I know the cold, Hon!"

"Not Boston cold! It's 10 degrees out and snowing!"

"Was driving bad?"

"A little messy, but I made it. What's your weather like?"

"Kristin, you just left maybe 5 hours ago! Not much has changed except for now it's dark. Oh, and it rained. But that's a given."

"I know Kev, but I miss it already."

"Really?"

"Uh huh. I miss the sun, the sights, you guys....."

"Aww! You miss us?"

"Yeah."

"Who do you miss the most?" he teased.

"Aww Kev, I miss you the most," she flirted back. "But to tell you the truth, I didn't think you'd call."

"Why? I told you I would."

"Kev, that's a line every female has heard ten times over!"

"I'm different. When I say I'll call, I do. Besides friends call each other all the time."

"We're friends?"

"Duh. Stop being so blonde."

"Hey!" she cried, laughing.

"Sorry."

"No you're not!"

"You're right, I'm not sorry. Just teasing."

They laughed.

"Kristin, I'm sorry but I have to go. We have an early morning and I need my sleep. I just wanted to be the first to welcome you home."

"Thanks Kevin. You have fun tomorrow."

"I'll try. Call me tomorrow night around 9, ok?"

"I will. Goodnight Kev."

"Goodnight K."

Kristin hung up and sighed. It really had been an unbelievable two weeks. She and the other two girls had acted like kids, tearing around the theme parks. It was so much fun knowing that this might have been the last time to act like kids, as they were all to graduate college in May. Kristin couldn't believe that she was about to enter the "real world"

And meeting the Backstreet Boys didn't help this "real world" scenario. In fact, it was a dream come true. After spending the day at Brian's they were able to meet the boys once more during their two-week stay. It was two days before they were supposed to leave and AJ insisted on everyone going out to Pleasure Island one last time together. That night was magic to Kristin.

There seemed to be a magnetic pull between Kevin and Kristin. She didn't want to leave his side all night. At one point, when they were talking cozily together at a table, AJ snapped a picture of the two of them. Kristin hoped with all her heart that the picture came out well. She sighed and headed for her bedroom.

"What am I thinking? There's nothing between Kevin and I except air. He told me himself that we were just friends. If something were going to happen, it would have already. Besides, why would he go for someone like me? He would have anyone he wanted," she grumbled out loud.

She picked up a brush and began to brush her hair. She wasn't an ugly person. She was average, just plain average. She had light brown, almost blonde hair that came to about her chin. She was of average height, and build. The only thing that she really saw beautiful about her was her eyes. They were a pale, haunting blue that ran on her mother's side of the family. Everyone commented on them, and how they knew who her family was because of their eyes.

After getting ready for bed, she snapped off the light. Her thoughts drifted back to when they all said good bye.

AJ had pulled her aside and asked for her address and phone number. He told her that as much as they enjoyed the company of the other girls, it was really her that they wanted to keep in touch with. She wrote it down and hugged him goodbye. When she approached Kevin, her pulse was racing.

"K, it's been fun. Did you give AJ your number?" he asked.

She nodded, unable to speak.

"Good. I'll call you. Have a safe trip home, I'll miss you."

He pulled her into a hug. Except for their dance on that first night, it was the first close contact between them. Electricity ran through their bodies. They both shivered. They parted.

"It's cold," they both said at the same time.

Except, it wasn't cold that night, Kristin thought. She rolled over in her bed. She'd never really know what happened that night. She was home and back to her life. She sighed again and soon succumbed to sleep.
