Chapter 3

The phone ringing woke the girls up the next morning. Mattie groaned and fumbled for the phone.

"Hello?" she grumbled.

Kristin cracked an eye open.

"Who's calling? Kevin? Kevin who? Kevin Richardson?! Is this a joke?" Mattie demanded.

Kristin jumped out of bed and grabbed the phone from Mattie.

"Kevin? Sorry about that," she said.

"It's ok. I take it you didn't say anything yet?" he replied.

"We got in late. I figured I would say something later. How are you? I didn't expect you to call."

"Well, I did. Anyway, Brian and Leighanne are having a cookout today. We talked about it last night after you left and he wanted me to invite you and Gillian and Mattie."

"Wow, I'm impressed. You remembered their names. What time?"

"Bri said to be there at 2 and to bring your bathing suits. It'll probably go into the night, so bring extra clothes too."

"Kevin, that sounds great! The only thing is we didn't rent a car."

"Say no more. Howie lives near the hotel, so meet him outside the main lobby at 1:30. I'll see you at Bri's. Here's his number if something comes up....."

Kristin jotted it down. They said goodbye and hung up. Gillian sat up in bed.

"What's up K?"

Mattie came out of the bathroom. "Kevin Richardson, K?"

"We met last night at the club. I spent the night with Kev and the rest of the BSB. They really are normal guys. Leighanne and Amanda are such sweeties....."

"K! The story?! Why did Kevin call?" Mattie cried.

"Oh sorry. Brian and Leighanne are having a daylong party and Kev called to invite us all. Howie's getting us at 1:30. Interested?" she smiled.

"Count me in! Oh my God!" Mattie cried.

"Sure, why not. Sounds fun!" Gillian added.

"I thought you'd say that," Kristin laughed.

Mattie headed back to the bathroom. "I need to shower!"

"Don't be too long! We need to also!" Gillian called to Mattie.

"No prob. Kristin, find my bathing suit," Mattie replied.

"Oh that reminds me. Kev said bathing suits and two outfits. I guess this is a long day. I'm going to wear my bathing suit there," Kristin said.

It was close to noon by the time everyone had showered, packed and dressed. The girls decided to head into one of the restaurant's cafe's for coffee and muffins before they left. Mattie couldn't stop giggling.

"I can't believe that we're going to a Backstreet party!" she giggled.

Gillian smiled. "It is pretty cool. This is something that I won't forget for awhile!"

Kristin glanced at her watch. "Let's go meet Howie."

They paid and headed for the main lobby. Once outside, they sat on a bench. It was the perfect day for a cookout. Within five minutes, a purple corvette pulled out. Howie stepped out of the car and waved to Kristin.

"Hey Howie! Good to see you again!" Kristin said, once at the car.

Howie gave her a kiss on the cheek. "Glad you could come Kristin!"

"Thanks for getting us. I hope it wasn't a problem."

"Not at all. Who are these cuties?"

"This is Mattie and this is Gillian."

Howie shook hand with both girls. "Ladies, let's go par-tay!"

Within fifteen minutes of driving, they had arrived at Brian's house. It was a beautiful home. The girls were amazed by its size. Several cars were already in the driveway.

"Ok girls, let's go!" he said, leading the girls into the backyard.

"Hey D!" Brian called from over on the deck

"Hey!" he replied.

Kevin looked up from his chair by the pool. A huge smile filled his face when he saw Kristin.

"Kristin! You made it!" he called jogging over to the girls.

"Hi Kevin!" she smiled. "These are my friends Mattie and Gillian."

He shook hands with both girls.

"KRIS.......tin!" AJ called, running into the back yard.

"Don't even think about calling me Kris, McLean!" Kristin cried.

"I didn't!" he protested, laughing.

"But you had the intent! How are you AJ?"

"Doll, I'm fine."

Amanda waved to Kristin as she headed up to the deck. After everyone had been introduced and reacquainted, everyone decided to play volleyball. It was a perfect split, 5 on 5. Kevin, AJ, Leighanne, Howie and Kristin were on one team. Nick, Mattie, Gillian, Brian and Amanda were on the other.

"You're going down K," Gillian mocked from the other side of the net.

"You wish G. I'll kick your ass like I normally do," Kristin teased back.

"Whoa! Wait a sec! Gillian just used a nickname for you! I thought you said you never let anyone use one!" AJ cried.

Kristin winked at AJ. "No, I never said that. I just said that no one was allowed to call me Kris or Kristy."

"She's right AJ. You never specified any nickname. Just Kris or Kristy." Brian called over.

"So K is acceptable then?" Nick asked.

"Kind of. Really only my closest friends can call me K."

"What about us?" Kevin asked.

"I guess I can make an exception," she said, smiling. She took her place in the front row, center.

"Hey! That's my spot!" Howie protested.

"Howie, we rotate!" Kristin replied.

"Plus, you haven't seen her play yet. You'll be glad she's center," Mattie called over.

"Thanks, Matts!"

Brian stepped up to the net. "Volley for serve!"

Within three hits, Kristin's team had won the serve. Leighanne served it over. It went directly to Brian. He hit it back over, directly to Kevin.

"K! Set!" Kevin called, hitting it across to Kristin. She jumped up and spiked it. Brian never stood a chance. It flew past him and slammed into the ground. He stood there, looking dumbfounded.

"Damn." Kevin said.

"Wow," Leighanne muttered.

"Shoot," Brian mumbled, still trying to figure out what happened.

"Ok, you can play center any time," Howie said.

Kristin laughed. "Like I said G, you're going down."
