Chapter 5

"Trust me, Lexi, you look fantastic," Elaine assured me as we stood in front of her full length mirror, getting ready for the prom. In an hour, Jeff and Brian were going to meet us here. We had all pitched in for a limo.

"I'm just so nervous," I said with a sigh, smoothing out my dress. Elaine and I had gone shopping last week, searching for the perfect outfits. I had finally found the beautiful blue dress from my dreams.

"I love what you did with your hair," I complimented Elaine. She had only curled her long, golden-blonde hair, but it looked absolutely great on her.

"Thanks," she laughed. "I love what I did with your hair too."

I laughed too. She had done my hair, piling it on top of my head after I had described to her what it was like in my dream. I wanted everything to be perfect for tonight. I had the dress, the hair, and the date . . . but I still felt like something was missing.

"Wow," Elaine said, looking at the clock. "We still have like, 45 minutes, and we're absolutely, totally, completely ready. What are the guys gonna say about that?" She laughed again.

I grinned and shrugged. "I don't know, this must be a first in the history of proms -- the girls ready when their dates pick them up. Who would've thought?"

Lainey giggled and we walked downstairs. After our parents -- mine were there too -- complimented us and told us how beautiful we looked, we watched some TV. Fifteen minutes before the guys were supposed to be there, we went back upstairs.

"We have to make an entrance," Elaine explained. She had one of those spiral staircases -- it was going to be awesome.

The fifteen minutes felt like forever, but finally the doorbell rang. I jumped up.

"No, no!" Elaine said, laughing. "We have to wait until our parents call us. Then we can walk downstairs, all floaty, and watch the guys' jaws drop."

"Oh, of course," I agreed with a laugh.

"Elaine! Lexi!" Elaine's father called up the stairs. "Your dates are here."

I was suddenly so nervous -- my stomach filled with butterflies.

"Ready?" Elaine whispered to me.

"As ready as I'll ever be," I replied honestly. We walked out of her room and down the stairs, trying to be as floaty as possible. Sure enough, the guys' jaws dropped. It was all I could do to keep from laughing.

"You-- you look--" Brian stammered, as we reached our dates. He was holding a corsage in his hands, but he couldn't take his eyes off of me.

I looked at him expectantly, an innocently grin on my face.

"Really, really good," he finished awkwardly.

I tried not to laugh. "You look really good too," I informed him. He grinned.

"Well, time to take pictures," my mom announced.

"Oh no," I groaned.

"Aww, come on, you only have one prom," Elaine's mom said happily, getting out her camera.

"No, mom, we have two proms -- junior and senior," Elaine said, rolling her eyes.

"Oh, that's right." Mrs. Cobb frowned. "Oh well, that doesn't get you out of pictures!" she said cheerfully.

"Come on girls, just get it over with," my dad said.

"You're right, Mr. McWilliam," Lainey said with a sigh. "Okay."

We all sat down on the couch together, and our mothers started snapping away. Then they took about a million more of Brian and me sitting on a chair together, and Elaine and Jeff sitting on a chair together. Then they took pictures of our dads with us, and then they made our fathers take the pictures so that they could get in with us.

"Aren't you out of film yet?" I asked exasperatedly.

My mom's camera started to whir. "Actually, yes," she said gloomily. Just then, the doorbell rang, and the chauffeur was standing at the door.

"Saved by the limo," Elaine said happily.

"Well, time for us to go!" I said cheerfully. "Bye mom, bye dad, bye Mr. and Mrs. Cobb!"

"Yeah, see ya!" Elaine echoed.

The guys just waved. Jeff gave Elaine a sweet look and then took her hand, and my heart danced with joy for them.

"Oh, this . . ." Brian said suddenly, fumbling with the corsage.

I laughed. "Were you just holding that for all of the pictures?"

He nodded sheepishly and held it up to me, trying to figure out where and how to put it on.

"Do it on the way there," I said. He nodded.

We followed the chauffeur outside and he opened the door for us, and then got into the driver's seat.

Brian sat next to me on one side, and Elaine and Jeff sat on the other side. Jeff smiled at me and I knew he wasn't mad at me for turning him down before.

"Beautiful!" Brian said brightly all of the sudden.

I turned to him and laughed. "What?"

"That's the word I was looking for earlier. You look beautiful," he said softly.

I know I blushed. "Thank you," I whispered. Brian smiled at me and attempted to put the corsage on me again.

"Mmm . . . I'll do it," I decided as he looked helplessly at the corsage and then at me.

"Okay," he said in relief, handing it to me. I laughed. The limousine suddenly stopped and the chauffeur turned the engine off. The door opened and Jeff and Elaine got out, followed by Brian and me.

This is it, I thought to myself, taking a deep breath. This is it.
