Chapter 4

"Has he asked you yet?" Elaine whispered to me as we got our books and hurried to chemistry.

I sighed in reply.

"Oh, Lexi, I'm sorry. But don't worry, you still have a week," she said optimistically.

"Oh, I know -- I just want him to ask now." I grinned.

She laughed. "You're so impatient."

"I know." I laughed too.

"Hey, Lexi," a soft voice interrupted from behind. I spun around.

"Brian! Hi!"

"Hey." He smiled. "I know we gotta get to class, but just in case I don't see you later . . ." He trailed off. "Well, can I ask you something?"

My heart tried to jump out of my stomach -- well, that's what it felt like, leastways.

"Sure," I said happily. "Oh, by the way -- this is my friend Elaine. Lainey, this is Brian."

"Nice to meet you," Elaine said, and I could tell she was trying not to laugh.

Brian grinned. "You too."

"Okay, what did you have to ask me?" I asked hopefully.

"I--" Brian started to say, as the first bell cut him off. "Oh, man, I better run. I'll have to ask you later -- dismissal, okay? See ya!"

He jogged off and disappeared into a group of hurrying juniors.

I sighed. "Dagnabbit."

Lainey grinned. "He's cute."

I grinned back. "I know. Come on, let's go to class."

I felt like 3:00 was never going to get here. I tapped my pencil impatiently in math, the seconds feeling like minutes, and minutes feeling like hours. Finally, the bell rang. I was out of there in a flash.

As I stood at my locker, getting the books I needed for that night, I felt someone tap my shoulder. I turned around expectantly, and a grin spread across my face. Brian, of course.

"Hello," he said, smiling at me.

"Hey!"

"So, um, I gotta ask you something now . . ." he said awkwardly.

I grinned. "I know."

Brian grinned back and immediately looked more at ease. "Okay. I don't know if you have a date yet, but I wanted to know if you wanted to go to the prom with me?"

I felt like dancing. "Of course!" I said, smiling so hard I felt that my jaw was going to fall off.

"Oh, great," Brian said, looking relieved. "Can I call you again tonight?"

"Yeah, sure!" I said happily.

"Cool. I'll see you later, okay? Bye Lexi!" He started to head for his locker.

"Bye Brian!" I called. I grabbed my books and walked as fast as I could without looking like a dork towards the exit. Lainey and I had some shopping to do.
