Chapter 3

I hung up the phone and it immediately starting ringing.

"Hello?"

"LEXI!"

It was Elaine.

"That's my name! Although usually people like to answer with the standard, 'hi' or 'hello.'"

She laughed. "Sorry - I was getting frustrated. I've been calling you for three hours and it was busy every time!"

I glanced at my watch. Sure enough, it had been three hours.

"Wow, time goes by fast," I commented. "Brian called, and-"

"Whoa, whoa, whoa," Elaine interrupted. "Who's Brian?"

"Oh, my gosh, I didn't tell you?"

"No!"

"Oh, wow." I sighed. "I found him, Lainey."

"Who?"

"Him!" I practically shrieked.

"Him, him . . . OH!" she exclaimed, finally getting it.

"Yeah."

"Wow," she said quietly. "Are you sure?"

"I think so," I said, getting excited. "I ran into him yesterday in the hall -- he's new, his family just moved here -- and then he asked for my number in school today, and he called when we got home and we talked for hours -- that was why it was busy -- and Lainey, it just has to be him, I feel like I've known him forever!" I finished breathlessly.

"Wow," Elaine said again. "That's pretty . . . that's pretty . . ." she trailed off, looking for the right word.

"Incredible?" I offered.

"Yeah, that's pretty incredible," she agreed.

I grinned. "I know."

"So he asked you to the prom?"

My smile faded. "No, well, I mean, not yet . . ."

"Lexi."

I sighed. "I know. But it's him . . . I just know he will."

"What if he doesn't?"

I grinned again. "Then I'll ask him."

Elaine laughed. "You wouldn't!"

"I would too!"

"Well," she said thoughtfully. "Maybe."

We were silent for a while.

"So what's his name again?" Elaine asked after a moment.

"Brian. Brian Littrell. He's from Kentucky."

"Weird that he changed high schools so close to graduation," she commented.

"I thought so too. He told me his dad was transferred for work or something, and they had no choice."

"Hmm . . . oh, well, guess what!" she said suddenly.

"What's that?"

"I forgot to tell you, it's why I kept trying to call . . . guess who asked me to the prom?"

"Oh, you got a date!" I said happily, excited for my friend. "Hmm . . . who?"

"One of your latest rejections," she said slyly.

I laughed. "Which one?"

"Jeff!" She let out a tiny squeal of excitement. "He's such a hottie, I just hope he's got some personality under all that muscle."

I laughed again. "I'm sure he does. Hey, Lainey, I gotta go. I completely forgot about my homework. So I'll talk to you later, okay?"

"Sure! I have to finish up mine too. See you tomorrow!"

"Yup, bye bye!"
