Chapter 5 - Useless to Ask

"So how did the date go?," A.J. asked as Brian lied down on the couch, channel-surfing.

"Mmmmm...," Brian murmured in response.

"I take it it went well?," A.J. asked.

"Mmmm mmm...," Brian answered.

"Is it too much to put a solid sentence together instead of just a string of "mmmm's" ?," A.J. inquired, a bit irritated.

"Mmmm...," Brian said, once again.

"Oh, forget it!," A.J. huffed as he left and went out the back door.

A few minutes after A.J. had left, Howie came galloping down the stairs. "Hey, man! How was your date yesterday?," Howie asked as he then noticed that Brian was still in yesterday night's clothes. "Whoaa...you didn't like...you know-uh...," Howie asked uncertainly.

"No," was the terse answer that came out of Brian's mouth.

"Oh. Then, cool. I mean, you know. Yeah, I'm sure you do... So, um, how did your night with Danielle go?, " Howie tried again.

"Mmmmm...," Brian said so very softly.

"Mmmm?," Howie asked in puzzlement.

"Mmmm mmmm...."

"Okie doke, then. Do you wanna go hang out with me in town?, " Howie offered. When there was no answer, Howie went over and looked more closely at Brian. Brian had fallen asleep. Howie went upstairs to his room and got a blanket for Brian. After he had put it over Brian, he left through the front door quietly.

An hour and a half passed. Nick, sitting just ten feet away at the kitchen table, read a newspaper.

"Mmmm..., " Brian was heard mumbling dreamily. "Mmm...Danielle, don't go...mmmm, I need you, " Brian mumbled some more.

Nick, in all his mischievous ways, snuck up on Brian and stood directly over him. Nick had heard everything Brian said in his deep slumber.

Some seconds later, Brian's eyes fluttered open. Seeing Nick, Brian greeted him a "good morning."

"Morning? It's noon already. Half the day's nearly over!, " Nick told him.

"Mmm...is it?," Brian stretched as he shifted his legs so that Nick could sit on the other end of the sofa. After Nick had sat himself down, Brian placed his feet on Nick's lap.

"How was your date with 'Pretty Woman', Brian?," Nick asked.

"...In a word, wonderful," Brian said.

"Can you elaborate on that?," Nick went on.

"Very wonderful," Brian responded.

"Sheesh, that tells me a lot," Nick grumbled.

"Why don't you ask A.J. and Howie then, if you want to know more?," Brian smiled mischievously.

"Maybe that's what I will do ," Nick said. "Hey. You wanna go to the beach today?," Nick asked his best friend.

"Why? So you can dig more holes in the sand?," Brian teased him.

"Whaat? I had nothing to do-I was bored, for cryin' out loud!," Nick said defensively.

" 'K. Sounds good. Make some sandwiches, will ya?," Brian asked.

"Me? Why do I have to do everything?"

" 'Cuz you know that if you don't, we'll all starve to death later. Please?"

"Oh, all right," Nick said.

"I'm gonna go and take me a long, hot shower," Brian said.

"The rubber ducky's on top of the sink," Nick yelled as Brian jogged up the steps to the bathroom.

"Ha, ha, ha....do they really make great Saturday night dates, Nick?," Brian retaliated.
