Chapter 13

When Caroline awoke she felt very tired. She was in the same hospital she was in when she found out she was pregnant. But now she felt so empty.

A nurse came in as she was sitting up.

"My baby, is she okay?" Caroline asked the nurse. She knew there were complications, but she didn't know how bad.

The nurse didn't have the heart to tell her that her baby didn't make it. She wanted her to find out for herself. "This way miss," the nurse said directing Caroline to her wheelchair.

They went to the section where they kept all of the premature babies.

Caroline took a look around, the babies were so small and fragile. They came to incubator #5, and Caroline noticed it was empty. "Wait, why is it empty?" she said starting to get worried. "Where's my baby?" the tears began to well up inside of her.

"I'm sorry, but your baby didn't make it," the nurse said sympathetically. This was the worse part of her job. "There were serious complications with the baby's heart, and by the baby being premature she couldn't handle it. I'm so sorry."

The whole time Caroline was receiving the news she burst into tears. She tried to stand up, but she fell and collapsed on her knees. She was still weak from blood loss.

Another nurse came and the two put her back in the wheelchair. The two nurses brung her back to her room, where she cried for the rest of the day.

When she regained her strength she was allowed to go back home. Caroline caught a taxi back to her apartment. Her car had been totaled.

Apparently the people that hit her were some drunk college students. They all lived, but they would have one hell of a hangover the next day. The students parents' insurance company paid for all the damages, but that still couldn't pay the price of losing a child.

Caroline stepped inside of her apartment. It suddenly felt very lonely. The extra bedroom usually used for an office was now a nursery. She walked inside the nursery looking at everything she bought and presents she received for the baby. Brian's mom even crocheted a blanket for her. Brian and Caroline decided on a name for the baby. It is Nicole Brianna Littrell. She found a box and began to pack Nicole's things. From blankets to baby clothes, bottles, etc. She cried during the process and never entered that room again.

For a month she was like a zombie, so pale and lifeless. She went to work at the dance academy, but no one dared to say anything to her. When she got home she simply went to bed. Brian called all the time, but she never picked up the phone. Brian thought she was still mad for what he said the night he left. He didn't blame her.

"God damnit, pick up," Brian cursed as he dialed Caroline's apartment for the 12th time that day. It rang about 6 times before he finally gave up for the day.

Nick came in and closed the door to the hotel room. "Brian, we gotta talk."

"Why? I don't feel like talking. Just leave me alone."

"Why have you been so isolated from the group?"

"I said I don't feel like talking."

"Well I'm going to make you fuckin talk. I'm tired of this shitty mood you've been in for the past month. Everyone's concerned about you. Now talk to me."

He sighed. "Well, before we left to go on tour Caroline and I had this huge argument," he said remembering the fight they had. "She was upset because I was leaving when the baby was due so soon. And to make a long story short I said some really cruel things that I shouldn't have said. I didn't mean to say it. It just came out of pure frustration and anger. I apologized, but I didn't put my heart into it. And that was the end of that."

"Brian I never knew..." Nick trailed off. "So is that what you've been doing the whole time? Trying to call her?"

"Yeah. I regret everything I said to her. I just want to take it all back. I know she's had the baby by now, but she hasn't even called me on my cell phone or anything. That's why I'm trying to get in contact with her. To see how Nicole is doing. My daughter." Brian stood there for a moment in silence. "Nick I can't stay here. I have to go home."

"What do you mean? The managers will never let you leave. That's impossible."

"Yeah, well we'll just have to see about that. I'm not going to let them run my life and you shouldn't either. I'm gone." And with that he left the hotel room to see Frank Preston, their manager.[AN: I just made these people up. I have no clue what their real names are.]

Brian walked inside his hotel room and slammed the door.

"Brian, what's gotten into you?" Frank asked a little shocked by his behavior.

"Frank I can't go on with this tour."

"What do you mean? I'm sorry, but you can't leave. Now if you'll please excuse me."

"Look, my girlfriend is pregnant and she's probably had the baby by now. Don't you see, I'm going to be a father. I don't care what you say, I'm on the next flight to Orlando."

"Brian, I thought we agreed that personal business will not interfere with this tour. Now if you get on that plane, that's it. No more tour. Can you honestly explain what happened to a bunch of disappointed fans?"

Brian thought about that for a moment. He didn't want to disappoint his fans. That was the last thing he wanted to do. With a sigh he said, "I'm sorry."

"Now that's more like it."

"I'm sorry that I won't be able to continue with this tour. Tell the rest of the guys that I left." He returned to his room, packed some of his things and left.
