Meadow Girl

Prologue

Brian sat on a large blanket that draped over a grassy hill. It was warm and sunny. Birds were singing and a pair of squirrels squabbled over some nuts. As Brian looked about he saw beside him a large oak tree. Impressively tall and strikingly beautiful with leaves, a brilliant green. It's branches seemed to stretch out toward the sun while implying a friendly hug to whom ever sat beneath.

There was a lake below the hill and directly in front of were he sat. The water was very still but the faint sound of it slapping the shore was apparent. Brian could see silver fish swim through the clear water. Reflecting the sunlight off there backs like a mirror. Brian smiled at there beauty.

Beyond the lake was a horizon of rolling hills. As green and beautiful as the one he sat upon. He suspected that it was the edge of a valley.

Behind Brian and the solitary hill which guarded the crystal lake. Was a meadow. It reached as far as he could see and was also lined with the same green hills as the other side of the lake.

Like a painting full of color and feeling. The meadow held magnificent beauty. To Brian it seemed to be a giant floor of lilies. Every color that was ever imagined was held by a lily.

But in this meadow was another beauty. A girl. She was gathering the lilies. She was a fair ways away but Brian could see that she had wavy golden blonde hair which touched her shoulders and was wearing a pastel pink dress that fell to her ankle and was tied at the middle with a red ribbon. She was graceful and elegant and had a sort of kindness to her movements.

At first thought Brian didn't know why she was there. But then realized that he didn't know just why he was there either. Brian suddenly thought that knew the girl from somewhere but swore that the two had never met.

Brian now made the effort to turn his whole body rather than his head. And when he did he was startled by a pair of brilliant blue eyes as clear as the lake.

"Hello." Said the strange voice of the girl.

She was now sitting beside him. Brian starred in astonishment at her beauty. She had a smile that was perfect in every way. And skin that was a creamy white but not pale, with no blemishes he could see. Her golden hair shined in the warm sun and was held by a crown of pink and white lilies she had woven together. She seemed only a few years younger than he, maybe 19.

Brian soon awoke from her trance and made himself aware of the bouquet she held out to him. "Are these for me he asked?" His smile widening.

"Why of course Brian. Do you see anyone else?" She giggled.

Brian took her gift gratefully and asked her.

"How did you know my name?"

"I just do." She sounded calm and happy.

"Oh." Brian seemed confused. But a sudden look of understanding and explanation from the girl gave him an unconscious answer. The confusion melted from his face.

"Well, dear Brian are you not going to ask my name." She proclaimed with a playful tone in her voice.

"Okay." He began. "What is you name?"

"It's-" She was interrupted by a blood curdling scream which came from the other side of the lake. The to stood up. and turned toward the sound.

"What is it?" Brian asked gazing toward the lake but seeing nothing. He noticed the once blue sky had turned an ominous black.

The girl turned to Brian and grabbed him by the shoulders. And she shook him. In fact she shook him with such a force that the wind had been knocked from him.

"Brian!" She screamed at him.

"Brian please!"

"Please Brian wake up!" She was afraid and was pleading for him to wake up.

'Wake up.' He thought. 'Has she gone mad. I am awake, aren't I?

Thunder and lightning now crashed above them.

"Wake up!!! Just wake up!!!!" She shook him harder and he winced at her grip.

"Please Brian, Please!!!

"BRIAN!!!"
