Crystallized Sayings of Sri Babuji

On Spiritual topics in general

God

God is one but he assumes infinite names and forms; hence whatever is the name or form in which you worship him you will be the recipient of God's grace.

The almighty is with form (Sakara) a shape and without form (nirakara) at the same time. Hence a devotee may worship God with or without form depending on one's own mental caliber. The name of God is sacred.  So wherever you are and whatever you do, you can repeat his sacred name. The eyes, which are incapable of seeing the Lord, are no eyes at all.  They are mere glass bulbs.Every atom of the Lord’s form is sweet like the sweetmeat, which tastes sweet from whichever side you have it.

As there is no difference between a person and his photograph, there is no difference between God and his devotee.God’s grace, which is like the light of the sun, is uniformly showered on one and all. The uniqueness of Bhagawan consists in the fact that he is unaffected and unaffected and unruffled, though the entire universe is create by Him. It is foolish to doubt the existence of God.  It is as meaningless as to say that there are no stars, for you fail to see them in daylight.

The Lord takes his abode in the hearts of devotees, which are pure and perfect.

When the doctor does not demand the fees, the patient is inclined to offer him more.  Similarly when a devotee worships the Lord without any desire he looks after his needs without asking.

Just as the reflection of moon remains steady in still waters, the mind, which is steady and free from desires and thoughts, gets illumined by the infinite light and grace of God.

If you keep both your hands on the lotus feet of Srimannarayana, he will free you from all your physical and spiritual ailments.

You need not pray to Lord for the fulfillment of any specific desire.  He is all knowing and blesses you with what is necessary for you.

The Life of man becomes meaningful only when he has the darshan of God.  Man simply wastes his life by his entanglement in material pleasures.

God remains unruffled and untouched by good and evil. Hence he is addressed as “sarva sakshi”

How to realize God

The Universal Mother is all merciful and caters to the needs of her children.  While the child plays, the mother busily engages herself in her household duties. But if he child starts crying, the mother gives up her work and runs to the child.  Likewise the Universal Mother runs to her devotee who prays with unflinching devotion for spiritual enlightenment.

The seed of grain grows again.  But if you remove the chaff, which conceals the grain, it is incapable of growing.  Similarly, if you remove the chaff of ego and attachment, you will be free from the cycle o births and deaths.

Man attains divinity and truth by having a full grip over his mind.  When the mind is thus controlled and turned inward, he will not be influenced by human qualities and foibles.  He is likened to the butter, which does not mix with milk, though it is a product of milk.

The self or ‘At man’ has no duality and hence it knows no difference.

You can never realize God unless you are aware of his oneness.

When your mind is concentrated on God, you will never yield to material attractions.

Like the river, which loses its identity by merging into the ocean, the individual who realizes Atman loses his individuality and becomes “Atma Swarupa”   .

When the flower grows in the coconut, the water gets gradually evaporates. In the same way as the flower of devotion rows in strength, the water of individuality is bottled out and enables you to see God.

Flute is always the ever-loving and constant companion of Lord Krishna because it is empty and hollow.  Similarly when your mind becomes hollow devoid of desires, you will be the recipient of God’s love and grace.

Diksuchi (Mariner’s compass) always points to the north.  In the same fashion, the mind of the devotee is always directed towards God whatever he does and wherever he is.

By conquering the enemy you are said to become an unrivalled monarch.  Likewise the conquest of internal enemies makes you the monarch of salvation.

Just by saying endlessly that there is a diamond in the box, you cannot become its master and owner. Similarly by just repeating the words ‘I am Brahman” you cannot become Brahman without internal purification.  You attain Brahman by incessant concentration.

One desire or thought leads you to innumerable births like the seed of the banyan tree which germinates into a huge tree

The child who holds tight his mother’s hand plays happly and without fear.  The devotee who entrusts himself completely to the care of God leads a happy and carefree life like the child.

The mind which attempts to see the Atma gets merged in the Atma, losing its identity like the darkness which loses its identity in light.  This is called as “Amanaska yoga”

In the morning light you can see your shadow following you.  But in the noon, you will not find the shadow.  Likewise all the bodily attachments automatically drop out from you, when wisdom dawns on you.

A foolish passenger traveling in train keeping the luggage on the head feels that he is carrying the load.  But actually he and his luggage are carried by the train.  Similarly it is God who bears all the burden.  As long as man does not forget his ego, he cannot expect help from God. But when he totally surrenders himself to God, he protects him with utmost care.

Devotion & Devotee
Devotion is nothing but implicit faith in God.

Devotion is the mother of wisdom

Devotion and wisdom are not different. Wisdom without devotion is like a body without the head.

Devotion and detachment are the two wings with which you can easily catch the fruit of salvation.

Implicit faith and deep devotion can retrieve us from the mire of “samsara”

The ant which tastes the sweetness of sugar-candy never leaves it even at the expense of its life. Similarly a true devotee never leaves the lotus feet of the Lord, come what may.

If you dig the canal of devotion with the implement of detachment, there springs up the fountain of wisdom and transforms the heart into a fertile field.

When Hanuman chants the name of Rama once, every atom of his being reverberates.  That is devotion.

Salvation
You should be from and dead to all shackles Mind is the source of all entanglements. Hence conquest of mind frees us from the physical entanglements. He that conquers his mind conquers self and hence knows no death.  He is deathless and there is no rebirth for him.

In a hand-grinder, the grain near the core never gets crushed. But the other grain gets powdered. In the same fashion though you are caught in the wheel of time, the devotee who is close the lotus feet of God will not be destroyed.

Guru (Master)
Guru is the God incarnate (Trinity)
One who considers Guru as a mere mortal will never attain salvation.
It is a sin either to listen or to say an insulting word about Guru.
The Master or Guru is one who lets you know the truth.
A sacred land is one where “Mahatmas” (holy-men) live
The disciple who completely surrenders and entrusts all his cares to Guru is fortunate.
The sense of surrender is noble.
Guru is likened to a steamer, which not only crosses the ocean but helps others to cross the ocean of life.

 Mind & Tranquility
The mind is likened to a monkey. Just as the monkey jumps from one branch to another, the mind hops from one thing to another.

Yoga is nothing but the conquest of mind. If you conquer mind, you can conquer the entire nature around you.

The mind has the capacity to record all minute experiences and feelings. Hence you should endeavor to record spiritual experiences alone on your mind.

Mind is quick like mercury. But if you place mercury in a hole pouring the juice of ‘tulasi’ over it mercury becomes steady.  Similarly if you train your mind to fix on the rosy feet of Rama who wears tulasi garland, the mind loses its wavering nature and becomes one with Rama tasting eternal bliss. The mental unsteadiness is debauchery.

It is unwise to search for tranquility externally. If you curb the thoughts end feelings that spring up from the mind you attain internal tranquility. Then the external sounds will be inaudible to you.

From the cow bung we get “vibhuti” (white ash) which we apply on the forehead in three rows. The application of ‘vibhuti’ symbolizes that your mind should become pure and white, devoid gunas like the white ash.

Concentration

You can reach the fruit of concentration only when you forget that you are doing concentration.

If you can forget your physical existence by means of concentration for a minute, even if you are sleepless continuously for a fortnight, the resultant pain will be forgotten. Concentration gives you such inexplicable bliss for no other pleasure is equal to spiritual bliss.

The repetition of God’s name should enable the mind to totally disentangle itself from the material world like the tortoise which automatically goes into its shell the moment it hears a sound.

There is no need to count the beads in concentration, for the mind will be diverted more to counting than to concentrating  on the rosy feet of the Lord.  You must be able to forget the mind.

There is no need to utter the name of the Lord loudly while doing concentration. If the steam in the engine goes out the train cannot proceed. Similarly the power of concentration should be within as the steam of the engine.

Mere closure of eyes is no concentration, for the mind may freely roam on worldly pleasures. The repetition of God’s name which makes you forget yourself and mind alone is true concentration.

Spritual Bliss

Just as we experience the temperature on the body, we must be able to experience spiritual bliss.Frequent baths in sacred rivers cannot make you attain salvation. Does the crow which dips itself incessantly in water attain salvation?

Bookish Knowaldge

Scholastic wisdom is like parrot-like repetition, it will not save us. You must experience the wisdom personally and it cannot be imbibed through book.

You cannot have the satisfaction of seeing Madras by merely looking at the map of the city again and again. Only when you actually see Madras, you will get the real satisfaction. Similarly you will not know what Brahman is by merely going through numerous sastras  It is to be experienced.

You must be in a position to experience the bliss of deep steep in wakefulness too.

The seed of Bengal gram in mango pickle gains the taste of mango pickle. Similarly the mind concentrated on Brahman turns into Brahman.

Mere textual knowledge devoid of spiritual wisdom is like a limited tank whereas spiritual enlightenment is an ever-flowing river

Other Sayings

There is no need to renounce family life to attain salvation. There is no need to have physical renunciation. Change in external appearance by wearing saffron robes is no sign of renunciation. You should be prepared to renounce the mind.

Indolence is ignorance.

The goal of all religions is the same, just as the goal of all rivers is the ocean.

You will attain salvation only when you realize that Brahman is truth and the universe is illusion.

One who demands a rupee to chant a “Mantra” in the ear is a fake Guru. He will never lead you to the goal of salvation like the blind man who leads you into a pit if you follow him.

When the lotus blossoms the bee flies from a distance and sucks its honey. But the frog which perpetually remains underneath the lotus never tastes Its honey. Hence physical  proximity to Guru is not a sign of spiritual enlightenment. The true disciple becomes one with Guru though he is physically miles away from him.

Mere deeds of magic will not retrieve you from the mire of ignorance.

Silence does not mean mere closure of lips. The mind should become dumb. That is true silence.

The inner thieves are more dangerous than the thieves outside. The six ‘gunas’ are the thieves from whose clutches you should keep away the gem of ‘gnana’.

Some disciples express their wordly wisdom by saying that they have innate desire of coming toe Babuji. But the family circumstances do not permit. It is not as if ‘samsara’is clinging to them. But they cling to ‘samsara’.

You can retain the Lion’s milk only in a gold vessel. Similarly a pure heart is the center of devotion.

God is repared to serve his disciple. So is it explicitly revealed in the lives of various devotees. For the sake of Gora Kumbhar God made pots and cleaned vessels for the sake of Sakkubai.

A Superficial devotion will nevr yield eternal bliss. You will be only in a position to catch fish and prawns by surface investigation. Only when you go deep into sea you can catch pearls and diamonds.

Mahatmas need no advertisement. They are like the sunlight.

There are people who consider Lord Krishna as a woman-hunter and thief. It is highly fallacious. Lord Krishna is not a physical being but eternal light or jyoti and the thoughts and desires are the damsels that dance round him. He keeps that damsels under control.

You should never worship the divine mother with a desire. If you worship with desires, there are bound to be disappointments. Mother will never do harm to her children.

There is no need to wear the chain of beads after realisation.

You should start spiritual training in the bloom of youth itself.

Ego is of two types--mature ego and immature ego. To feel that you have realized God and truth is a type of ego. But it is mature ego. To identify yourself with the physical body is immature ego. Both entangle us in the cycle of births and deaths.

To send the mind to slumber or to keep the mind under complete grip is ‘samadhi’ or trance.

A “sthita pragna” feels painful to turn to the vanity fair of the world from the lotus feet of the Lord like the baby calf which screams with pain when separated from the udder of the mother cow.

Those who experience the spiritual love will have every blood vein of theirs thoroughly purified with the divinity they attain!

Music will be most delectable when sruti, laya and tala are properly kept. Likewise you will attain inexplicable eternal bliss by a suitable blend and merging the sativa, tamas and rajo gunas in “pranavanada”.

The conquest of “trigunas” and the attainment of eternal bliss is the goal of a “sadhaka”.

                                                 Jai Jai Gurudev Samardh !
