written by Ian Ford & J.L.S.

On the hill above your place,
Our eyes met as I gazed upon your face,
Overhead the sun did shine,
As I asked you to be mine.

We sat upon the grassy knoll,
Where I let my heart unfold.
In the warmth of that day you heard me say,
Be mine, be mine, forever and a day.

You looked at me in surprise,
I could see the brightness in your eyes,
They shone like gold,
So bright, so bold.

As the breeze blew gently up there , you said,
You would be mine and we would be wed.
It was with gladness I greeted your words.
My heart skipped a beat as it soared like the birds.

But alas we were dealt a grievous blow.
Alone you must be, as away to war I must go.
For King and country they need me,
But my heart is for you and always will be.
We walked hand in hand until we had to part,
With love and sadness in our hearts.
You to the place that we call home,
Me off to war all alone.

I know I am miles away from you , we are so far apart,
But you are still the love of my life, my soul my heart.
I pen these  words to you my sweet love as bullets fly all around,
And pray one day we meet again, safe and sound.

As this tale unfolds, of the girl I met and loved,
I look through the dust and smoke to the stars above.
I feel cold without her love to keep me warm.
My body feels like its been ravaged by a storm

Never again will I see the light of day,
But it is my loves face I am missing as they lower me underground to stay,
My eyes are closed forever now,
But I can still see the love I left behind somehow.

One day as it is meant to be,
We will meet once again.
And though today is not that day,
I shall love you even then.
