Natriku is a
small re-settlement community near Akuse, located in the Dangme west District in
Eastern Region of Ghana and its about two-hour drive from Accra the Capital
Town of Ghana.
It has a high
level of (95%) poverty with majority of the people not being able to afford a
decent meal per day. Teenage pregnancy rate has increased between the ages of
12/14 due to rape and incest. The nature of the soil is clayed, that makes it
very difficult for the people to engage in any meaningful agricultural
cultivation. The only available source of employment in this community is rice
plantation where they are paid below minimum wage.
BACKGROUND
OF THE AGED PEOPLE
Balm Foundation
has identified a number of old aged people who live under very deplorable
conditions with a number of them being totally blind. Their age ranges from
sixty-six to ninety years. These elders have been abandoned by their families
due to the financial constraint they have cost the family. They also have
several health problems ranging from high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis
and several other old age medical complications. One of the blind women lives in
her house alone and does everything from cooking to; other domestic human needs
all by her self. Most of these old people are very weak as a result of not
having proper nutrition, socialization and often times died without dignity.
JUSTIFICATION FOR THE PROJECT
The poor and
unhygienic conditions under which these elderly people live make it so necessary
for a home for the aged to be provided in this village. This home will prolonged
their lives. Competent staff will cater for the residents, which is sensitive to
their needs from a broad range of perspective.
Balm Foundation
has been providing medical care and assisted living in its home care facility to
these elderly people.
