Kandarr - Medina-Garriguez

First Round, Wimbledon, June 2001.

The match was on one of the smaller seated courts. Jana was playing a quite dangerous opponent in Spaniard Anna Isabel Medina-Garriguez, who although ranked in the mid 60s, had had some of her best results recently.

Jana served brilliantly in warm-up, hitting the service area "T" as if using a rifle-sight. However she did not serve quite as well for most of the match. Medina-Garriguez has a good serve too, and fired in five aces during the match.

Wimbledon 2001It was Jana, however, who got the early break in the first set. She remained comfortably ahead throughout the set, Medina-Garriguez being unable to break her serve. A lot of Jana's first serves were called out, and she had to rely a lot on her second serve. This proved good enough to keep her in the points, however.

The Spaniard did earn several break points in the first set, but grew ever more frustrated as each time she gained the chance of a break, Jana picked up her game and saved the point with an excellent first serve. Jana won the first set comfortably.

SET TWO

Jana went ahead immediately in the second set, but then the momentum began to swing against her. Medina-Garriguez improved dangerously. She began serving more consistently and was managing to get nearly everything back that Jana threw at her. She also started to throw in tricky, looping shots that at first brought a lot of errors on the volley from Jana.

With this improved play, Medina-Garriguez at last broke back to even the breaks. Even though her serve continued to improve, earning her a lot of cheap points, the Spaniard was still frustrated that she could not gain the vital second break of Jana's serve. Living up to her nickname of 'Houdini', Jana managed to get out of trouble every time a break threatened, producing an excellent serve from out of nowhere. Medina-Garriguez let out several screams of frustration, as either an ace or an uplayable serve robbed her of her hard-earned break point, her attempts to hit the speeding ball sending it flying out into the next court. All in all she had 9 break points against Jana in the match, but converted only one of them.

It was getting dark as the score of 6:6 was reached, and it came to the tie-break. Jana double-faulted to go 3;4 down. Medina-Garriguez double faulted in reply. Then Jana won a vital point on the Spaniard's serve to go 5:4 up.

It was now Jana's serve, and she needed two points to take the match. If she lost those two points, the Spaniard would have set point on her own serve. But now Jana produced her two best serves of the match. The first was a clean ace that sped past on the left hand side of the court to give Jana match point. The second whizzed past a few feet away from me, so fast that it was just a blur as it hit the service line and crashed into the barrier behind the court. Another clean ace - and the match was over. Jana seemed very pleased to win the match. She stayed behind for a while to sign autographs and be photographed by fans. Medina-Garriguez rushed off, seeming furious at losing without having had a chance to hit the ball, especially after having played so well in the second set.

All-in-all Jana won by playing better on the big points.
