Kandarr surprises Mauresmo
French Open, Roland Garros,
Paris, May 2001
The match began slowly before a huge,
expectant crowd, composed largely of Mauresmo supporters.
Jana took the first game on serve. Mauresmo seemed
listless but won her first service game. So far there had
been far more errors than winners on both sides of the
net.
In the third
game Jana started serving better, getting two service
winners and then an ace on her second serve. Mauresmo's
serving seemed weak, and Jana was able to make plays on
most of her serves, returning well, and coming to the net.
This way she broke Amelie in the fourth game to lead 3:1.
Despite an attacking fifth game from Jana,
mistakes in execution led to Mauresmo taking an immediate
rebreak. Mauresmo then won her serve easily to equalise
at 3:3. Jana was still serving excellently however,
hitting another ace and two unreturnable serves to lead 4:3.
Mauresmo won her next game. Then at 4:4 Jana's serve went
off-line a little and she went down 0-30. She played two
good attacking points, one from the baseline and one from
the net to even at 30-30. Another unreturnable serve, and
a well played point won Jana the game
In the following game Jana fought her way to
four set points, but Mauresmo finally struggled clear and
won the game. Jana's next service game began with two
long rallies, which she stayed in well, and won both. A
service winner and a short rally completed a love game to
lead 6:5. Jana was playing really well now, forcing
Mauresmo into testing rallies, and hitting aggressive
groundstrokes to all corners of the court. She
soon had three more set points. Mauresmo saved the first
with an ace, but the French crowd fell quiet as Jana won
the next point with a dipping volley to take the first
set.
SET TWO
The second set was very different. Amelie was
more aggressive and Jana seemed to become nervous. She
gave away a lot of points with unforced errors to fall
behind 4:0. Everyone was now expecting a third set. But
Jana's game seemed to be falling into place once more.
She fought hard in the heat to hold her serve in a game
of long, testing rallies, bringing the score to 4:1.
Amelie then won her serve to lead 5:1. At this point it
seemed inevitable that Mauresmo would take the second set
and force a decisive third.
But Jana fought the seventh game equally hard
to reach 30:30. Then she took the next two points, the
last with a serve, volley, and smash, to pull back to 5:2.
Amelie had a set point in the next game, but more
attacking play from Jana brought her the vital break to 3:5.
In her next
service game Jana dominated totally. She sent in two
unreturnable serves to Amelie's backhand, followed by an
ace and another service-winner to wrap up the game to
love in under 50 seconds. Score 4:5. Amelie again served
for the set, but her serve was not punishing enough to
keep Jana out of the points. Jana defended ably, running
from one end of the court to the other to get every ball
back in play until she could attack. Varying her play
continually, so that Mauresmo never knew what sort of
ball to expect next, she won the key points, breaking
again to 5:5.
Refusing to let up, Jana served well once more,
rushing the net to volley at every opportunity. Again she
won her service game to love. The French crowd began to
grow alarmed, suddenly realising that Mauresmo had to win
this service game to stay in the match. They tried to
cheer Amelie on, but Jana held her nerve, attacking every
short ball from her opponent to go up love thirty. Amelie
then double-faulted to give Jana three match points. Jana
took the first of them for a well-earned victory. 7:5 7:5.
