Maleeva - Kandarr
Estoril, Portugal, April 2001
Jana Kandarr upset 2nd seeded Bulgarian, Magdalena
Maleeva, in the women's tournament today. The victory
earns the world-ranked number 73 German player a passage
into the Quarter-Finals of the Estoril Open. The
elimination of the second-seeded clay-court specialist is
one of the big surprises of the tournament.
Jana Kandarr won by two sets to
love, the scores being 6 - 3 and 7- 5, in a match that
lasted 1 hr 25 min.
After the match, the German Player was
naturally pleased. Asked about the possibility of her
winning the tournament, she was not prepared to make any
predictions.
"At the moment I'm just
thinking about my next match. This isn't the time to be
thinking of the final. This is a very tough tournament,
and I'm in a very competitive quarter," answered the
German, who in her next match meets the winner of the
match between Tathiana Garbin and Janette Husarova.
Magdalena Maleeva said, "I'm
disappointed at losing. I think it was because I didn't
play as well as my opponent on the most important points."
