Favourite Garbin falls to Kandarr
Estoril, Portugal, April 2001
German tennis player, Jana Kandarr brought down Italian 8th
seed Tathiana Garbin in two sets 7 - 5 and 6 - 2 to reach
the semi-finals of the women's tournament, where she will
face qualifier, Elena Bovina.
In the first set it was Garbin
who first took the advantage by breaking serve in the
sixth game to lead Kandarr 4-2. But the German, who beat
2nd-seeded Magdalena Maleeva in the previous round, came
back to take three games in succesion, including two
service breaks, to lead 5-4. The Italian returned the
favour, breaking Kandarr's service, but the German showed
great form, decisively winning the next two games to take
the hard-fought first set.
In
the second set, the Italian's game declined disastrously
as she made numerous unforced errors and her first serve
percentage fell to 17%. Kandarr quickly took a 4-0 lead.
Garbin fought back to 4-2, but afterwards won no more
games, quickly losing the match. Kandarr won in 1 hour 21
minutes. She goes on to face either Elena Bovina or Tina
Pisnik.
After the final game Jana
Kandarr was clearly delighted. "I'm pleased. It's
been a long time since I reached the semi-finals of a
tournament. Since I prefer to play the bigger tournaments,
it's difficult to get to the finals or semis."
She revealed that she was well-used
to playing on clay courts. "In East Germany I could
only play on clay. They had no indoor courts at all."
