| Right now I am trying to re-read Anne McCaffreys Pern novels. Very hard when they all sell out of the bookshops here so quickly. I'm still trying to find a Whitcoulls that has the next one I'm up to! They're just as good as I remember them and its kinda cool cause I know that I like them and I get to read them again while I don't remember all the plot. It's also a bonus to find there's a few I haven't read yet! As you would expect, I've also lately read the Harry Potter series and Lord of the Rings. Both great as I've said before - they're completely different. It was nice to read something light and easy for a change just after exams, with Harry Potter. And LOTR I originally read back in 3rd form and I tried again in 6th form but the language bored me stiff, so I never got more than a few chapters in before I gave up. This time, with the movie hype and all, I decided to stick with it and while at the beginning I was skipping passages left right and centre by the middle of the first book I was absorbed in it again and didn't want it to end! |

| Favourite Authors: David Eddings is the classic epic fantasy, but not so dark and serious as LOTR or similar. If you want to read any of his books, start with Pawn of Prophecy the first book in his first series. The books are quite funny and light hearted. Anne McCaffrey is most famous for her creation of Pern. A world colonised by humans and then left to fend for itself against an unknown and unexpected enemy. She brings to life Dragons with a telepathic link to their riders - the first line of defence. I suggest you start with Dragonflight if you want to read them in the official reccommended order or if you want to start chronologically read Dragonsdawn first, but be prepared for a sharp change in time and style. Click here to go to her official site Terry Pratchett is known for the Discworld. He takes fantasy conventions and twists them, turns places upside down (eg: Aussie in The Last Continent), populates this flat world floating through space on the back of four elephants and a giant turtle with incompetent Wiz(z)ards inept night watchmen and witches. It's a laugh a minute! Every time I read a book again I find a whole new set of jokes I missed first time round. You can start almost anywhere with these although the first is The Colour of Magic. The series runs in threads of characters, so start with Guards! Guards! for the Night Watch, Wyrd Sisters for the Witches and Mort for Death. I recently read The Truth and it's definitely up to standard. Now I'm just waiting for the latest one to come out in paperback, about June I think. Yay! |
