.: Kaissa :. |
Kaissa is the Gorean word for "the game" taken from various passages from the twenty-six books of Gor by John Norman. This is a game very similar to Chess though there are numerous differences as well. Within the books, the game is popular among almost all civilized Goreans, of whatever caste, most learning to play as a child. This game plays an important part in the Gorean Society as shown with clubs, competitions, and tournaments as well as leaving possible ways to settle disputes not relating to one's Honor. Furthermore its importance is shown with most city libraries having many scrolls of Kaissa strategy and techniques.
Though similar to chess, Kaissa is played differently throughout Gor with more pieces upon a larger board making it more complex. The Game of Kaissa consists of ten different playing pieces, with twenty one or twenty three pieces per side depending on the version you choose to play with. Placement of the twenty first or twenty third side piece upon the board is after the seventh move and on or before, but not later than the tenth move and counts as your move for that turn. Pieces represent the warriors/officials of cities at war, each attempting to capture the other's Home stone. There are two opposing sides Yellow and Red, Yellow sets the play of game with first movement. The Home Stone is the most important piece and also the single piece that is placed upon the board after the game has started though it is unable to capture it is able to move one square at a time. The Home Stone represents the heart of your city. It is that which you must protect. It is also that of your opponent's you must capture. Kaissa represents Gor as a whole and thus why it is considered Gor's most honorable and popular pass time game.
Though the books provide much information about the game, they do not yet provide a complete set of rules for playing such and thus a faithful Gorean stepped up and took lead from passages within the books to form a complete set of rules and piece movements. Thankfully we now have a system with which to play from, that is at the very least, partially supported by the books.
Standard rules were created by the Great Grand-Master of the Caste of Players and officially promulgated by copyright March 16, 1979, patented November 12, 1985 and trademarked September 6, 1983. Standardized Kaissa may also be known as Merchant Kaissa, Player Kaissa or PKI Kaissa, the last in regards to the owner and creator of the formal game system: Port Kar Industries / Jeffery J. Shaffer.
