| Whew! Small space, lotsa people, hot and sunny, beer flowing. When Karen and I got there, we were walking to the bandshell and heard the b'ys doing their soundcheck on the walk over. Can't tell you what song it was even though we were right there behind the fence. I never heard it before! Don't think it was a trad song, sounded more "pop". And they sang the whole song. Of course I can't tell you anymore because I can't remember any of the words. Oh well, they sounded good at any rate. (I later found out it was Everything Shines by the Pushstars that they sang!) Most people were there to see the Tragically Hip, I think. I CAN tell you that the Canadian Embassy knows how to throw a party! The Ambassador came out in a suit jacket, took it off to reveal a hockey jersey underneath. No team in particular, just had Canada on it. He was funny - He came out and started the bit from the beer commercial. My name is Kevin. I am Canadian...did a few points from the commercial. Of course very few of the Americans there (we were in the minority) knew what the heck he was talking about, but the Canadians certainly did. They were all in shorts for the sound check, but changed for the way-too-short 50 minute show. Danny had on a Chieftains T-shirt. Darrell looked absolutely scrumptious in a light green T-shirt. I mean it - he was looking real good tonight! Alan had a black button-down shirt & orange pants, San wore a black shirt that zipped partway down, there was the flaming Bob bowling shirt. D, S, & B all had black pants. San's roots are becoming visible - looks kinda cool! But Darrell, oh baby! And I wasn't even over there, we were stage SanBob. Since it was so short a time, there wasn't much banter. GBS did wish everyone a happy Canada Day, of course. |

| Started out with Donkey Ridin' When I'm Up Goin' Up Consequence Free - Alan says "This is from our new album called TURN that was released some weeks ago." The guy behind me says "Yeah right, it's a year old". "Not down here," says I, "We had to wait till the year 2000." "Whoa! Sucks to be you guys!' says he, obviously Canadian. |
