The Construction of

Clancy

Home

Clancy is a Vacationer class Gaff-rig sailboat designed by Stevenson Projects. She is 21' on deck (24' overall), with a shallow draft, full-length keel and clipper bow.

Another well constructed Vacationer - Not ClancyClancy is constructed of ply and fibreglass. She will have built-in camping fixtures including a fuel stove, fridge and sink with hand water pump. Clancy is a pretty good-sized boat, and is claimed to have a nice smooth sailing feel to match.

Clancy’s shape has a lot in common with one of the most seaworthy boats on the water, the Grand Banks Dory (with an added keelson and bowsprit). Clancy has been designed to handle some pretty nasty waves without making a big deal about it, and should remain nice and dry boat in the cockpit as well.

The salty old gaff-head sail rig has a lot of advantages. With the Another well constructed Vacationer - Not ClancyThe Donald Lassiter Pagemainsail held on three sides by spars, it's easy to control the shape of the sail while underway.

Just because gaff-head rigs are usually seen on slow old barges doesn't mean they can't sail. Some of the fastest sailboats in history, as well as some incredibly rapid ice-yachts have used gaff-rigs.
