Welcome To McGraw Kindergarten!

Please do not send lunch money to school with your child at this time; you should pay in the cafeteria before school for your child's lunch. Parents, thank you for helping your child learn his or her "lunch" numbers! About a third of the students know their numbers. If you don't know your child's number, please ask the cafeteria staff for your child's number. (I sent home a copy of all the numbers provided to me last month.)

Time is flying- October is just about here, which means parents might be  starting to think about costumes. The kindergarten children are allowed to dress up on Halloween. The children can wear costumes that show good character. Superheroes, heroes, princesses, occupations, and other costumes that will provide our students a fun dress-up day without evil overtones will be allowed. No vampires, witches, devils, skulls, blood, weapons, horror characters, or villains are allowed. If you have any questions, please ask.

Reminder: Sandals are not appropriate to wear on the kindergarten playground. We very strongly encourage your child to wear tennis-type shoes for their safety.

Rhyming Words: Arizona State Standards

Concept 2: Phonemic Awareness

Identify and manipulate the sounds of speech.

PO 1. Distinguish spoken rhyming words from non-rhyming words (e.g., run, sun versus run, man).

PO 2. Orally produce rhyming words in response to spoken words (e.g., What rhymes with hat?)

You can practice rhyming words at home. Say two words. Have your child tell you if the words rhyme or don't rhyme. Ask your child what word rhymes with another word you say. This is an important skill for learning to read. You can find lists of rhyming word families here:

Letters of the Alphabet: Arizona State Standards

Concept 3: Phonics
Decode words, using knowledge of phonics, syllabication, and word parts.

PO 1. Identify letters of the alphabet (upper and lower case).

Please practice the ABC's with your child. It is very important that your child knows each letter of the alphabet.
Just knowing the "ABC" song is NOT knowing the letters of the alphabet.
We will be practicing in class daily, but your help at home is essential. We will try to send home some flash cards that can be cut apart and used at home. You can access the flash cards now at this link:
