Military Licensing in the Republic Of Korea
The names and numbers on this page are currently out of date. For current information, contact Dale Tongue HL9NP here. He has much more current information than I have and will be assuming the responsibility for keeping this page up to date. I left Korea without a good plan for maintaining this information up to date in 2001. I hope Dale can serve this function better. 73 DE Howard, K2LAW
Below is general information on obtaining your Korean Amateur Operator's License under SOFA.
All of the people you will need to contact are located at Yongsan Garrison in Seoul, and they handle licensing for Eighth US Army- if they don't handle it for all of USFK, I'm sure they will be able to steer you in the right direction. (Bottom line- if you're Army and headed to the "Land of the Morning Calm"- these are your guys.)
Now for the easy part- you need a copy of your FCC License to turn in, and there is a single page form you need to fill out. Then it's all up to the folks in Yongsan. You will be awarded an HL9 callsign. Be advised there are differences in the Bandplan over here- most notably, 2 meters is only half as wide- 144 to 146 MHz- and repeaters are not popular- instead, there are frequencies for each city. On HF, it seems that 15 meters is the most popular band in this corner of the world. More information on operating frequencies and bandplans is here.
Yongsan Garrison has an ARC- A good point of contact is Jim Pines who can be e-mailed at here or Richard Irving (HL9FK/K3FK) at DSN 726-4383/6038 or e-mail here.
Hope this info gives you a starting point.
